Frenchman Valentin Debise was the fastest rider during the warm-up session for the 76th Daytona 200 at Daytona International Speedway. Riding his M4 The 22 Project ECSTAR Suzuki GSX-R600 on Dunlops, Debise lapped the 3.51-mile infield road course in 1:50.261, which was not far off his qualifying time of 1:49.526.
The warm-up session ahead of the 200-mile race, however, isn’t always used for chasing fast lap times.
Pole-sitter and defending Champion Michael Barnes, for instance, only did a 1:51.025 during the warm-up compared with the 1:49.487 he did to capture pole position, but Barnes was using the session to scrub in tires, brake pads and practice pit stops.
Danny Eslick, who was ninth in the session with a 1:53.073, spent almost the entire session practice pit stops on his TOBC racing Yamaha. In fact, the TOBC racing crew has been practicing pit stops relentlessly so far this weekend.
Project MayDay/Bock’s Concrete Inc.’s Geoff May didn’t get the opportunity to look for speed or prepare for the Daytona 200 as the engine in his Yamaha YZF-R6 suffered a failure. Instead of preparing for the race, May’s crew was forced to perform a motor swap in his racebike.
