Anthony WEST, Australia (MZ-RE HONDA), 1:45.053 More, from a press release issued by JiR Moto2: The GP of San Marino has begun well for the two JiR Team riders. In today’s free practice session the two pushed hard from the very beginning, taking their places at the top of the timing sheets right from the start. It was clear that the latest technical changes have yielded good results and both riders are satisfied. Simone Corsi made a good start, with a 1’40″607 during the ninth lap that lasted as best time until a few minutes from the end. Unfortunately a technical problem with his clutch meant he had to abandon the session having done only 13 laps. His time, however, gives him 9th position. Simone Corsi “I arrived in Misano with much enthusiasm, we’ve got an excellent technical package here and I want to make it work to bring home a good result. Beside the single lap time I believe I have a good pace, even if we couldn’t test enough due to the technical problem. I’m confident that tomorrow I will start good again and fight to gain a front-row position.” It was a great debut from Alex De Angelis with the MotoBI, who took provisional pole position with a time of 1’40″064. The San-Marinese concentrated on learning the new machine, but already in early laps he was up with the leading riders, taking provisional pole on his 26th lap. Alex De Angelis “It’s difficult to hide our satisfaction of this performance. Things went good immediately and I found a good feeling with the bike. I rode a lot to get more confidence and in this way I tested also my race pace, which is pretty satisfying. For tomorrow we’ll need to make some fine-tuning work on the settings, in particular on the rear, but without upsetting anything because the basis is already good and I need to run again to sharpen my riding. I’m sure that with this performance we create high expectations, but I feel I can do great things with this team and we’ll work hard not to disappoint our fans.” More, from a press release issued by Interwetten Moriwaki Moto2 Team: Lüthi starts from Zero in Misano The first free practice of the Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini went different than expected for Tom Lüthi and the Interwetten Moriwaki Moto2 Team. The changes they made with the geometry of the bike this afternoon went in the wrong direction and did not help Lüthi at all. He lost a lot of time because of this setting change and was not able to catch up to the other competitors. But the first free practice is a session where you can test such things and there is still enough time to change the direction. Tomorrow the team will go back to the set up of Indianapolis and it will hopefully go better then. Lüthi finished the first free practice in Misano on 27th position. Tom Lüthi, 27 1’41.799: “We changed something on the geometry of the bike and went back to Zero as we are still looking for rear-grip. Unfortunately it did not work at all, especially not in the high-speed corner 10. We lost a lot of time because of that and it didn’t help us at all. Now we will go back to the settings from Indianapolis and then it will work again.” Terrell Thien, Team Manager: “There are settings that throw you back to the end when you try them. We tried something that could have been the perfect way or like with us the wrong direction. It didn’t help us. We also have a disadvantage regarding testing on this track and then we have to use the first free practice to try such things. Tomorrow we will change direction again and it will work.” More, from a press release issued by Marc VDS Racing Team: SOLID START TO MISANO WEEKEND FOR MARC VDS The Marc VDS Racing Team riders got their Misano race weekend off to a solid start, as Hector Faubel finished this afternoon’s free practice session seventh fastest, with Scott Redding five places further back in 12th position. With rear grip at a premium around the Misano circuit, Faubel used the early part of the session to make changes to the set-up of his Suter MMX machine, to improve both rear traction and front-end feeling. Like all the Moto2 riders, the 27-year-old Spaniard struggled to stop the bike backing into the turns at the end of the straights, but rode around the problem to record the seventh fastest time on his final lap. Redding was running consistently in the top three for most of the early part of the session, but dropped down the order as he tried a few different settings on his Marc VDS liveried Moto2 bike. The British teenager looked set to post his fastest lap time right at the end of the session, to move back into the top three, but was forced to abandon the lap and walk back to the pits when his bike cut out exiting turn six. Both Faubel and Redding were less than one second adrift of the fastest lap time of the session, set by Alex De Angelis, and both Marc VDS riders are confident of closing the gap even further during tomorrow’s free practice and qualifying sessions. Hector Faubel #55: 7th – 1’40.564 “We had a good session today. Like everyone we had some issues with rear traction, I was struggling to get the bike to hook up out of the turns early on. We also had some problems on corner entry, with the rear trying to come round on me all the time. We made some changes to the set-up of the bike, mainly the front suspension settings, and there was a little improvement. We need to change the gearing slightly tonight, as it was a little short in second gear when the bike was banked over and the rolling circumference of the tyre reduced, but this is a quick fix. Overall the feeling with the bike was good, the lap time was good and, although I’m not feeling 100 percent at the moment, I’m confident we can go even faster tomorrow.” Scott Redding #45: 12th – 1’40.768 “You really have to work hard to get the best from the bike here. Grip is a bit of an issue and the rear really wants to come round on you when you’re hard on the brakes. To counter this I was trying to keep my weight on the inside, which improved things a little. I was expecting to jump back to the top end of the timesheet right at the end of the session, especially after going quickest through the first split, but then the bike cut out on me exiting turn six and I had to park it and walk back. I feel good on the bike, pretty much how I felt in Indianapolis, so I’m looking forward to getting a good run in qualifying and pushing for the front row of the grid once again.” Michael Bartholemy: Team Manager “Both riders made a good start to the weekend today. Hector steadily improved both his set-up and his lap times throughout the session and Scott looked all set to return to the top of the timesheet before the bike cut out. I am sure that both riders will continue to improve tomorrow, but they need to avoid getting embroiled in the battle of the Italians that seems to have kicked off this afternoon, both in qualifying and the race!”
