Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Jason DiSalvo was the fastest man in Wednesday morning’s AMA Superstock practice at Daytona International Speedway. Riding his YZF-R1 Limited Edition with a race-compound rear Dunlop slick, DiSalvo lapped the 2.95-mile road course in 1:39.819, which is just shy of Aaron Yates’ lap record, 1:39.667, turned in 2005. “That lap came when we put in the adjustable swingarm pivot,” DiSalvo said in sarcastic reference to AMA Pro Racing’s recent announcement that adjustable swingarm pivots are legal for all AMA classes as long as the machine comes from the factory with the adjustability built in. DiSalvo’s YZF-R1 LE does not come with an adjustable swingarm pivot. “I just caught a clean lap,” continued DiSalvo. “That was pretty much as the bike came off the truck, and that’s pretty much how we’re going to race it. That was a possible race tire. We’re having some issues, but that may just be because it is so cold.” Second-fastest in the session was Geoff May, who turned a lap time of 1:39.976 on his Pirelli-shod Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R1000. May said his bike was in full race trim when he turned his lap time. May’s former teammate Vincent Haskovec won the 2005 AMA Superstock race on a Pirelli-equipped Team M4 EMGO Suzuki. DiSalvo’s teammate Jamie Hacking was third-quick in the session with a 1:40.599 he turned “without pushing.” Hacking, however, suffered brake fade during the 50-minute practice, which caused him to run off-track at the chicane and crash. “I stood it up straight and ran it through the grass,” said Hacking. “I was OK until I came across hay bales three-rows-deep. I wouldn’t have crashed if those hay bales hadn’t been there.” Hacking said he hit his head hard in the crash, but planned to continue riding. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Aaron Yates had not ridden since crashing and breaking his right shoulder blade during testing at California Speedway February 7, but he was one of the first riders on track Wednesday morning at Daytona. The Georgian appeared to be healthy, turning the fifth-fastest time of 1:41.493, but after the session Yates told Roadracingworld.com, “It’s (shoulder) hurting. It’s holding me back.” AMA Superstock qualifying takes place Wednesday afternoon, and the Superstock race is Thursday afternoon. Provisional Wednesday Morning AMA Superstock Practice Times: 1.
