DiSalvo: That Had To Have Been The Biggest Crash Of My Career

Jason DiSalvo’s Dunlop tire test at Daytona International Speedway ended early Sunday with a huge, fiery crash that destroyed Yamaha’s one and only 2008-spec YZF-R1 Superbike. He was taken directly to Halifax Medical Center to have his wound cleaned and his elbow X-rayed Sunday night, but he called Roadracingworld.com Monday morning to update everyone on his condition and the gory details of his crash. “I was on a really good lap,” DiSalvo said as he waited on a flight out of Daytona Beach, Florida. “I picked up the throttle. I think I might have been wide open. I was headed to the edge of the track. I knew I was going to be close to the curb, but I thought it was gonna be perfect. It must have stepped off the curb by a centimeter. In fact, I think what happened is the rear wheel slid, because the front tire was inside the paint. I don’t remember it going sideways. It was going straight, and then the next thing I knew I was flying through the air. “That had to have been the biggest crash of my career. It wasn’t just the speed or the height I flew, but the combination of the two. I was 15 feet in the air, because I looked down and I could see the bike pirouetting on its end a few feet below me. And I had to have been doing a buck twenty (120 mph) because I was just about to shift into fourth gear. “The bike was already on fire, then it came down on its tank and [the tank] split open. What I think happened was the fuel inside the tank all ignited at once because it was hot, then it got real hot. There was literally an explosion, and I came down through the flames. I was engulfed during the explosion. Luckily, the bike started going the other way, and I was using my one good arm and legs to crawl the other way. I probably set a record for the 50-yard crawl. Then I just had to sit there and watch it burn. That sucked. “I’m alright. I got 25 stitches, 11 outside and 14 inside. I didn’t want to look at it, but Bethany [DiSalvo’s girlfriend] said it went all the way to the bone and it was all ugly and hanging open. I guess I missed the nerves pretty close, but I do have some weakness in my hand. They said any nerve damage I might have would probably heal quickly by self-regeneration.” DiSalvo said he would probably recuperate at his family’s home just outside of Buffalo, New York rather than stick with his original plan to return to his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. With an anticipated recovery time of two weeks, DiSalvo said he wouldn’t miss anything other than a planned autograph signing in California and should be ready to resume testing in January in Las Vegas.
