Doctors today cleared racer Lee Acree to return to normal activities including racing motorcycles, a remarkable recovery given that the same doctors recommended amputation of his left leg eight months ago. Acree was seriously injured in a collision at Infineon Raceway last May during an AMA Superstock race. The crash was set off when Jason Pridmore’s GSX-R1000 suffered a mechanical problem and slowed dramatically exiting a turn with Acree running right behind. In a phone call to Roadracingworld.com today, Acree said that the bones in his lower left leg are at about 70-80% normal strength and are expected to eventually return to full strength. Surgeons inserted bone grafts and a plate in Acree’s leg, and transplanted abdominal muscles to the leg to replace missing tissue and improve blood supply. Told that his recovery to date seemed to be due to a miracle, Acree said, “I have to agree.”
