Dominguez Wins Five CMRA Races At Motorsports Ranch – Cresson

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) returned to Motorsports Ranch in Cresson, Texas, this past weekend for the penultimate round in the CMRA’s 10-event season. The event drew 476 total entries, 45 of those being Endurance team entries. There is an old axiom in Texas that states, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes and it will change.” Indeed, the racers at MSR experienced the proof that this saying does have truth behind it as the weather showed its many sides over the course of the weekend. Friday’s CMRA New Rider’s School enjoyed sunny and warm conditions, almost perfect track weather, but racers were greeted on Saturday morning with dark, threatening clouds and distant thunderheads that soon gave way to a light rain that turned into heavy rains, and the precipitation ultimately wouldn’t clear off until sometime around noon. The Mini Sprint races were flagged off in pouring rain, and later, after the Mini Sprints had been completed, the 3-hour Mini Endurance race went its entire duration in a steady rain that made the 1.7 mile track slick and treacherous. At the end of the Mini Endurance race, teams that had crashed outnumbered teams that didn’t fall down by a sizable margin. It was, in fact, a red flag with roughly 30 minutes to go that made the race official, and many teams were relieved when the race was declared over. In spite of the nasty conditions, AF1 Racing III (Ted Phillips, Steven Barone, Jon Francis) not only kept their two-stroke Aprilia RS125 upright during the race, but logged the most laps, crossing the finish line first and taking the overall win. Kansas-based Howlie Boyz (Dean Thimjon, Jason Swan, Kurt Stock, John Orchard) rode a strong race on their Ninja 250R to finish second, one lap down to the winners, while Road & Track Racing (Keith Hertell, Jess Foltz, Nick Montonaro, Alexandra Humphries, Michael Humphries, Lindsey Leard), finished three laps down to the leaders, enough to capture third place overall on a rented Ninja 250R. By the time the 4-hour Big Bike Endurance race started, the skies had, for the most part, anyway, stopped dropping moisture; however, they remained overhead, and were still dark and ominous. The track was fully wet when the starter threw the green flag, and the Big Bike Endurance series overall points leader, Moto Ace (Derek Wagnon, Jeremy Kidd, Joe Prussiano, Dustin Dominguez, Dustin Meador), riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000, quickly asserted themselves at the front of the field on the slippery race course, opening up a sizable gap over the other contenders behind them. As the race progressed, the clouds never completely went away, but the rains did, and eventually a dry, albeit narrow, race line developed. The pace quickened for all teams, but Moto Ace maintained its lead, and at the end of the race, only the KTM RC8 of Ridesmart/RPM Cycle (Ty Howard, Ricky Jordan, Bryan West, Ricky Parker) were able to apply any real pressure to Moto Ace, but KTM would come up 30 seconds short to the Suzuki at the finish line, finishing in second spot. Third place overall went to Lone Star Track Days (Andy Galindo, Garet Tomlinson, Mark Niemi, Chris Romeo, Harry Tomlinson) riding a Kawasaki ZX-6R. Moto Ace rider, Derek Wagnon said, “We literally played ‘odd man out’ to see who was going to start the race in the wet because no one wanted to! Jeremy [Kidd] lost, so he had to start, but he rode really good and just took off. We were all impressed, especially considering he’s been recovering from a wrist injury and this was his first time back on the bike in months.” With the race day over, the rain seemingly gone, and the skies starting to clear, many racers were checking the weather and were relieved to see that the forecast called for partly sunny skies and mild temperatures for Sunday Sprints. With Sunday’s dawn, however, racers were wondering what happened to the nice forecast from the day before. The Sunday morning skies were gray and dark clouds swirled around the race venue. The temperature was quite a bit cooler as well. Few racers had confidence that the day would make it through its schedule without seeing some rain at some point, and it did rain briefly during a couple of the early races. Racers race, though, and when the first green flag flew, folks got down to business. The biggest winner on the day was Dustin Dominguez. Dominguez has made it a habit this season to enter eight or so races per weekend and claim wins in most, if not all of them, and this weekend was no exception for the Oklahoma native. Dominguez took home wins in five of the eight Sprint classes he entered: Exel Transportation Forumla 2 Expert, South Central Race Center Superstock C Expert, Lightweight Twins Expert, Superbike D Expert and Superstock D Expert. Dominguez’s run at a perfect day was hampered when he was forced to borrow a bike for half of his races after crashing his last weekend at a race in Colorado, making him ride on an unfamiliar set-up. Once again the weather took another turn right about the time the race schedule broke for lunch, only this time for the better. The sun finally peeked out from behind the clouds, and within a few minutes, the gray clouds had finally dispersed for good, replaced by blue skies. Now racers were getting their first taste of the usual Texas sunshine, but the temperatures remained relatively cool. The track was almost completely dry, which meant that racers were essentially free to twist the grip as hard as they wanted. And twisting the grip hard was exactly what Ty Howard would do. Howard added three more wins to his already perfect CMRA Sprint race season. The KTM RC8 rider has literally owned the AVTEQ – Superbike A Expert, HighPerformanceCrew.com / HPC Decals – Formula 1 Expert and RaceworX – Superstock A Expert classes, winning these classes every time out this season, usually in convincing style, and often lowering the lap record in the process. Today would be much of the same, with Howard laying down a blistering pace in the Formula 1 race, clicking off a lap time of 1:14.760, just a few ticks away from his own lap record that stands at a 1:14.586. But that was as quick as he’d go on the day, and while he won all his races, he was unable to lower the track record, mostly because of the green nature of the track after the weekend rains. Despite the adverse weather conditions, and a few on track incidents that included a pair of red flags to tend to injured riders, the 19 race Sunday Sprint schedule finished on time, and had racers thinking about the CMRA’s season finale to be held at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas, on October 29 – 31. The schedule for the 2010 season finale is jam-packed with races, as usual. A Lone Star Track day practice event and CMRA New Riders School takes place on that Friday, a full slate of Mini Sprint races coupled with a 2-hour Mini Endurance race and a 5-hour Big Bike Endurance race make up the Saturday schedule, and a 19 Big Bike Sprint races are scheduled to take place that Sunday.
