New Hampshire Motor Speedway – Larry Hanlon, a former LRRS Champion who was severely injured during a race in 1996, has remained active in the club. Recently Larry has been a top fund raiser for the New Hampshire Brain Injury Fund. One of his events is hosting a lap of NHMS for racers, crew and fans during lunch break on Labor Day race weekend.

The Fourth Annual Larry Lap: At Saturday’s Riders meeting, Eric Wood introduced Larry; “When I was just coming up through the ranks, I had the pleasure of watching Larry Hanlon win everything. He was a total mad man. He is the only motorcycle racer I have ever seen pick up his race bike over his head and throw it on the ground! Larry is a great champion. He has a few words about tomorrow’s Larry Lap…”

While crews brought out boxes of green Larry Lap team T-shirts to pit lane, Hanlon went on to thank the crowd for their support of his charity over the years. Sunday morning just before racing, the entire 1.6 mile New Hampshire Motor Speedway road course was end-to-end in green T-shirts. Hundreds of fans took to the track to have Larry show them the racing line behind his custom side car rig. The counting is still going on, but it is estimated that over $5000 was raised for the cause.

Middleweight Battles: Saturday’s Motorace Dash for Cash featured Argo Cycle’s Scott Greenwood leading flag to flag from a re-start over Orient Express’ Steve Giacomaro and Bruce Transportation’s Cory Hildebrand. Greenwood’s Kawasaki ZX-6R was faster than it has been all season, but so were Giacomaro and Hildebrand. Meanwhile, Ivan Debord came from the back on a borrowed Yamaha to nip Seacoast Sport Cycle’s Jesse Sandoz at the flag for fourth. All five were on Dunlop tires.

Greenwood; “I’ve not been getting good starts. After the red flag, my re-start was better. Steve was on the outside and he rides hard and is tough to pass. I had the line and it was tight. I put my head down to check out but my Dad was giving me signals that they were too close…”

Steve Giacomaro; “I was determined to hang with Greenwood, but I just couldn’t do it. I heard Cory coming, though. I rode as hard as I could but I knew he was there waiting for a mistake. It worked out and I want to thank Peter Kates at GMD, Sean Sweeney at Sweeney Racing Engines, and the guys at Dunlop.”

Cory Hildebrand; “I want to thank Scott Greenwood for getting me that matched set of Dunlops! I want to thank my family for getting me here too…”

On Sunday, Middleweight Supersport turned into something different. Steve Giacomaro grabbed the holeshot over Hildebrand and Greenwood only to get a red flag in the second lap. On the re-start, Hildebrand took the point followed by Giacomaro, Greenwood and David Fett on his Yamaha. Hildebrand and Giacomaro were running lap times deep into the twelves, which was new for both. Hounding Hildebrand relentlessly, Giacomaro finally took the lead just past the half flags. Meanwhile, Zach Holcomb riding the Brockton Cycles Yamaha, took 4th behind Greenwood and stretched his advantage over David Fett.

At the flag it was a jubilant Steven Giacomaro over Hildebrand and Greenwood. Fett and Joel Allen claimed 4th and 5th after Holcomb fell in turn 3 on the last lap.

Rising Stars in LRRS: Tyler Sweeney bumped up to Expert just two races ago, and Frank Babuska, Jr. bumped up to Amateur from Novice at the same time. Both youngsters are making their mark early. Babuska scored 4 wins in lightweight and motard classes. Sweeney had remarkable success as well.

Riding a KTM 525 Supermoto, Tyler Sweeney grabbed the hole shot in the highly competitive Motard class. He was continuously attacked by veterans, Jason Routhier of Ducati North America fame, Woodcraft’s Michael Mcdermott, and former Loudon Classic champ, Mike Martire. All were bunched in a four-bike draft right to the half flags. Making a big charge into the iconic turn three, McDermott got crossed up on the brakes and clipped Routhier at the apex. Both went down, but Martire jumped onto Sweeney’s fender and pushed him hard for the win. The youngster held up to the champ’s pressure and took the checker with a bike length to spare.

Sweeney; “I want to give a big thanks to Sto Smead at Motorace. He believes in me and helped me out with some great Michelin tires. I didn’t know what was going on behind me. I got a debris flag going up the hill, so I threw up my arm and let off. Mike rolled by me with his arm up too, but then we got no red flag! I pinched Mike off in turn six I think.”

Martire; “I saw McDermott go in there all out of shape and clip Jason. I jumped on Tyler for the lead and tried him several places lap after lap. He rode perfectly. We got a debris flag in turn four and he threw up his hand. I rolled by him but let him back by going into turn six. It was a really fun race. I thought I might get him at the flag, but he’s got a fast motorcycle.”

The Loudon Road Racing Series concludes its 2009 season October 3-4. Motorcycle road racing will not return to New England until spring 2010. Join us for the Fall final when the Northeast CCS Championships are decided. For more information, log onto www.LRRSracing.com.

“People talk about the value of track days over racing. I don’t see it. What can possibly match having that green flag drop and charging into turn one with all your buddies” – Scott Greenwood from the podium
