Loudon, NH – Perfect conditions greeted LRRS racers and their fans. The New Hampshire Motor Speedway road course was fast! SuperTwins- Before racing began, Eric Wood was asked if he might try to lower his track record. He responded; “Not this weekend. My motor lost some compression at the National, so it doesn’t have much power. I’m going to shorten the gears to see if it helps. I’d be thrilled to run an eleven.” His first chance was the Supertwins race. Wood took the holeshot aboard his Woodcraft Ducati 1098, but didn’t get the gap he was looking for. Dennis Levesque fired his Seacoast Ducati into second place with Robby Nigl in tow aboard his Peachpit desmo. On the 2nd lap, Nigl closed up tight on Levesque, but couldn’t make a pass stick. On the 4th lap the #5 Ducati of Eric Wood failed to come around to take the half flags. He dropped a cylinder on the back stretch and pulled off. With the bit in his mouth and a clear track to the checkers, Dennis Levesque stepped up his pace. Running a string of twelve’s, he began to gain a tenth or three every lap all the way to the flag. He saved his best for the last lap when he recorded a fantastic personal record of 1:12.18. Rolling into to his garage amid congratulating fans, Levesque was asked if this was his first win of the season; “It’s the second win of my life!” he exclaimed. “I won a Formula Forty race once…” Levesque expanded on his stunning last lap; “I try never to look back but I did on the sixth lap to see if Robby was sitting on me for a last lap pass. I thought I saw him, so I gave it everything I had. I didn’t know I had a gap!” Kyle Thompson and Jim Rich rounded out the top five aboard their Seacoast Sport Cycle machines. Not Yet Young Man- The top three prognosticators in Supersingles had motors making much more power then they should. Jeff Wood is the club’s premier Supermoto racer and his Bettencourt’s Honda CRF450 is a fast motorcycle. Mike Martire had his 2009 GMD Computrack/Woodcraft/Michelin KX450 pumped big and looking to make a mark. Fast teen, Tyler Sweeney, showed up with his secret sauce; a big bore version of a 2003 KTM 525 built to the nines by his dad, Sean. Grabbing a monster holeshot from the 3rd row, Sweeney all but left the pack for dead with a gap. Not to be mishandled so easily, Jeff Wood threaded his way forward and took over the lead before they completed the first lap. Mike Martire scrambled to climb into 3rd. With Wood in the lead coming onto the front straight for the first time, Sweeney served notice by ‘motoring’ him to take over going into turn one. Wood clawed it back a few turns later but gave it up again by the half flags. Sweeney got into a rhythm early on and laid down a series of blistering laps, hitting his marks every time. Wood sat on his rear fender, catching a whiff of his draft down each chute. On the white flag lap, Sweeney looked to have the race in hand as he towed Wood’s Honda up the hill for the last time. Not yet young man… Executing his classic inside move in the bowl, Jeff Wood reclaimed the lead, looking to control the race for the last few turns. Coming up on traffic, Wood was balked in the last turn, but passed on the outside with his Honda spinning up violently on his drive towards the waving checkers. Sweeney was caught up in it with a ‘moment’ of his own, only to come up just short. It was a great motorcycle race. Asked if he planned it that way, Jeff Wood responded; “Not the whole race! I rode as hard as I could but I had to be patient there at the end. He had a lot of power, but I had a little something on him coming out of turn 3 that offset his drive going up the hill. I waited to use it on the last lap. That was a real fun race.” Tyler Sweeney exclaimed in his garage after pulling off his helmet; “Did you see that? He almost piled on the last turn with the lapper. I almost did too! Wow that was fun!” A dejected third place finisher, Mike Martire, remarked; “I ran faster laps in that race than ever before…” Motorace $1500 Dash for Cash- A large grid lined up at 5pm on Saturday for the feature race of the weekend. Earlier in the day, Christian Cronin looked to be a favorite by grabbing the holeshot aboard his Egg Shell Yamaha in the Superbike race and led Scott Greenwood for much of it. Cory Hildebrand was also looking faster on his Bruce Transportation Yamaha R6 after winning a stirring battle over Rick Doucette in the Heavyweight Supersport race. Shane Narbonne lined up further back aboard his DAS Suzuki. He was expected to threaten after his stellar performance earlier in the month at the ASRA National in New Jersey. Starting from the pole, #1 plate holder Scott Greenwood got a great jump aboard his Argo Cycles R6 and squeezed the holeshot into turn one over the very fast R6 of Christian Cronin. Getting jammed in the first turn, both Cory Hildebrand and Shane Narbonne gave up precious track to the flying pair on the first lap. Hildebrand was quickly into third, but Narbonne was mired in traffic further back. Greenwood was near perfect, riding with the kind of confidence only dominance brings. Cronin was faster then he’s been, but never quite got close enough to show Greenwood a wheel. By the 4th lap, he was starting to slip a few tenths a lap. Meanwhile, Cory Hildebrand was riding all by himself with Shane Narbonne finally into fourth place but well back. At the half flags, Narbonne started reeling both Cronin and Hildebrand back. Late race, he took over third and set out after Cronin, looking for a break in heavy traffic. At the flag it was Greenwood with a big lead over Cronin, Narbonne, Hildebrand and Bruce Transportation teammate, Brent Lyskawa. Podium announcer, Bruce Berlanger, to Shane Narbonne; “Congratulations on your track record at New Jersey. I guess you and Jeff Wood had a lot of fun showing those boys the way. Tell us about your race today. You had a slow start. Were you having a problem?” Narbonne; “No nothing like that. It was good. I just got a bad start and when the leaders are running low elevens, it pretty hard to catch up! I had a good battle with Cory. All in all, it was a good race.” Christian Cronin during the podium interview; “To tell you the truth, I expected a little more of myself. Scotty is on it. He did a ten! I gotta’ go better then that to beat him. It was fun trying, though.” Scott Greenwood to Bruce Berlanger; “It felt good. I saw two ten’s on my timer. I felt the pressure early and just tried to focus…Just run clean laps. That’s my personal best. I did an eleven one on the old track so this feels good. I can feel my age, though. I was a little tired there at the end, but things are going well right now.” The Loudon Road Racing Series returns for the penultimate round Labor Day weekend. Several traditional events are planned, including the popular ‘Mizz Match’ annual women’s race and Larry Hanlon’s fund raiser, the ‘Larry Lap’. LRRS Round 6 Results August 7/8 Formula 40: 1.
