Jessica Zalusky (Kaw ZX-6R), 1:52.492 65. Rhiannon Lucente (Suz GSX-R600), 1:53.117 More, from a press release issued by Daytona International Speedway: Miguel Duhamel Takes Third Straight Daytona 200 By Honda Pole Ben Spies Takes Pole For AMA Superbike Opening Round DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Miguel Duhamel continues to add to his successful history at Daytona International Speedway by capturing his third straight Daytona 200 By Honda pole. Late in the session, Duhamel turned a fast lap of one minute, 41.095 seconds, 105.050 mph to bump Yamaha’s Jason DiSalvo off the pole and tie Kenny Roberts’ mark of three straight Daytona 200 By Honda poles. “It’s really awesome and a great honor to be up there with Kenny Roberts,” Duhamel said. “Right now, I live in the moment. Hard work paid off. My hat’s off to the whole team. Everybody worked really hard, put the bike together and we pulled it off.” Miguel Duhamel will attempt to win a record sixth triumph in the motorcycle classic that is scheduled for Saturday, March 10. Duhamel won his first Daytona 200 By Honda back in 1991 and his fifth victory which tied him with motorcycle legend Scott Russell atop the wins’ list came in 2005. “We’ve been working really hard,” Duhamel said. “At Honda we have a calendar. We know Daytona is coming up, so we’ve been working pretty hard to get our bikes ready for this race, which is biggest race of the year. The bike worked really good. I’m really pumped about it.” DiSalvo took second with a lap of 104.692 mph while Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes (104.293) and Jake Zemke (104.186). “I didn’t want to make any assumptions (about winning the pole), but I knew Miguel was probably out on a good lap,” DiSalvo said. “For just doing this one (Formula Xtreme) race, it’s amazing how dedicated the team is,” DiSalvo continued. “I get to start from the front row again, and I’ll try to make the most of it come Saturday.” Ben Spies Takes Pole For AMA Superbike Opening Round DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., — Ben Spies kicked off his campaign to defend his AMA Superbike title by capturing the pole for Saturday’s opening round of the AMA Superbike Series at Daytona International Speedway. Spies toured the 2.95-mile road course aboard his No. 1 Yoshimura Suzuki with a fast lap of one minute, 37.546 seconds, 108.871 mph. He edged his Yoshimura Suzuki teammate Mat Mladin by less than four hundredths of a second. Spies, who was nipped by Mladin at the start/finish line in last year’s thrilling finish of the AMA Superbike Opening Round at DIS, said that he even though he won the pole, he left some speed on the track “We left a few tenths out there,” Spies said. “It was really close. I would have liked to have nailed my lap. But the bike is working good, me and Mat have a good gap, and it’s probably going to be what it was last year.” Mladin, who has won the 2005 and 2006 AMA Superbike Opening Rounds at DIS, had a fast lap was 1:37.581 seconds, 108.832 mph. Rounding out the podium for the AMA Superbike Opening Round was Yamaha’s Eric Bostrom (108.152) and Kawasaki’s Roger Lee Hayden (107.523). Spies says that this year’s race will once again come down to the rider who masters the Daytona draft the best. “Around this place, if you’re not going to drop them, you’re going to win because of the draft or because you outsmarted somebody,” Spies said. “Hopefully, we can outthink everybody this year.” Tickets for Daytona 200 Week By Honda events are available online at www.racetickets.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.
