Discovery Bay’s Elena Myers Hopes History Repeats Itself in Sonoma SONOMA, Calif. (May 5, 2011) — On May 15, 2010, motorcycle racing fans at Infineon Raceway witnessed motor-sports history when then-16-year-old Elena Myers became the first female winner in AMA Pro Road Racing’s 76-year history. The Discovery Bay native will look for history to repeat itself when she and the rest of the AMA Pro Road Racing Championship return to the Sonoma Valley for the West Coast Moto Jam, May 11-15. Last year on her home track, Myers completed her graduation from the status of curiosity to legitimate AMA Pro SuperSport competitor in the eyes of any remaining skeptics. Already a fan favorite at the time, the bandwagon has been overflowing ever since as this girl takes the fight to the boys and refuses to back down. “I’m really excited for Infineon,” said Myers, who rides the SuzukiScoopFans Racing Suzuki for Team M4. “It’s my home track and where I made history last year. It definitely gives me confidence going back there knowing how well I did last time. Last year’s experience was incredible it was great. Making history isn’t something that happens every day, obviously. I’m really glad that I was part of that, especially with my home crowd right there to cheer me on through it all.” Myers will face a significant hurdle in her attempt to repeat history, though, as she is nursing a fractured wrist suffered in a slow-speed Supermoto accident two weeks ago at the Stockton Motorplex. The team plans to put Myers on the bike on Friday of race weekend to determine her comfort level and ability to race. “I’ve been working hard for the last two months to get ready for this race, and unfortunately this accident didn’t end up so well. I can’t make any guarantees at this point, but my plan is to race. I’m planning on seeing how it goes at the track on Friday,” said Myers. “We have a long season ahead of us, so if it comes down to missing one race to make the other three, I guess that’s what I’ll have to do.” Myers is accustomed to riding under pressure, though, and last year’s victory came under the watchful eye of her local fans and media members. “Even before last year’s race it was crazy,” said Myers. “The track set me up with some local television stations I was on live in San Francisco a couple days before the race, so it was crazy to get all the big coverage and then really pull it out at the end of the weekend.” While her Infineon Raceway win was the unquestioned high point of ’10, Elena rung up several other impressive rides as well, racking up multiple top-five efforts. And like every other rookie, she had her lows as well. She suffered her share of mistakes and struggled at times with crashes, injuries and general inexperience. A year wiser and stronger and with last season’s SuperSport standouts mostly graduated to Daytona SportBike competition Myers is expected to take a big step forward this year. She’s viewed as a prime championship contender and a threat to grab the checkered flag on any given weekend. “That’s a confidence booster but I know it sure ain’t gonna be easy,” said Myers, who is currently ranked second in AMA Pro SuperSport West Region points. “I got sixth and seventh in Daytona. The competition is just as tough as it was last year. It’s a long season.
