Time to be a Champion The 2009 Castrol Power1 New Zealand Superbike Championships picks up momentum with the release of the ENTRY FORMS for the five round series. The Championship is set to be even bigger than 2008 and will again be backed by Castrol New Zealand, local distributors of Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha, along with motorcycle magazine Motorcycle Trader & News. The entry forms may be downloaded from the following websites www.castrolroadracing.co.nz or www.nzsbk.co.nz and of course www.mnz.co.nz . The 2008 Championships saw battles in all six classes some fields were dominated by local heroes while others saw battles develop between riders from all over the World. We saw Australian “Hot Shots” Robbie Bugden (Suzuki), Gareth Jones (Yamaha) and Damien Cudlin (Yamaha) battling past New Zealand Champions Hamilton’s Andrew Stroud (Suzuki) and Feilding’s Craig Shirriffs (Suzuki) in the Superbikes. While Christchurch’s Dennis Charlett and James Smith (both on Suzukis) had the hard charging Sadowski Brother (David Jnr. & Matt) from the USA to contend within 600 Sports Production. The smaller classes were no different, we saw some of New Zealand’s new crop of road racers coming through in the 125cc Grand Prix Class, with riders such as Christchurch’s teenagers Cameron Jones and Nick Cain coming through to win race at just fourteen years old. In the Formula Three class, we had the old heads of Palmerston North’s Glen Williams and New Plymouth’s Terry Fitzgerald battling the youth of Blenhiem’s Steve Wood all on Suzuki 650s. While the NEW Pro-twins was dominated by Aucklander Karl Morgan. The Sidecar racing was again dominated by imported LCR machines, with the championship going to Wanganui’s Steve Bron on a machine used by Englishman Tim Reeves to win the 2007 World Sidecar Title.
