Excel EMR Wins Six-Hour CMRA Endurance Race At Hallett

Conner Blevins, final rider for the Excel EMR team, rode their Dunlop-shod Kawasaki ZX636 to victory at the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) 6 Hour Championship Endurance race this past Saturday, May 17. CMRA held its third round of CMRA Championship Endurance, Mini Sprints and Lightweight Sprints, bringing over 10 hours of racing action to Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma. The weather started cloudy and cool after some overnight rain, turning sunny and warm with a stiff wind, making track conditions good for fast lap times on the newly repaved 1.8 mile course.

The Mini and Lightweight sprint grids ran first and were a great warm up for round one of the Solo 30 races. The new 300 Supersport, 500 Supersport (both sponsored by Altus Lawton Motorsports), and Grom Challenge classes also gained in popularity, with a combined grid of 16 bikes.

The 6 Hour CMRA Championship Endurance race had a combined grid of 33 teams, with classes including A Superbike, C Superbike, Formula 2, and Modern Classic Endurance. When the starting lights went out at 11:26 am on the 2 wave start, the racing was immediately competitive. The P1 Racing KTM RC8 team of Ryan Andrews, Ty Howard, Eddie Thornton, and Derek Wagnon got out ahead of the pack. The Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted I Like Big Gas!! team of Scott Buckley, Dewayne Davis, Brad Kelly, Craig Montgomery, and Brandon Young got the drop on the Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Village Idiots team of Brandon Cleland, Chris Headley, John Orchard, and Garet Tomlinson and the Excel EMR team for second. Team LocoMotion riders Alonzo Contreras, Ryan Max Johnson, and Matt Vastine aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 went at it with the Suzuki GSX-R750 mounted Desert Rats Racing and Kawasaki ZX-6R LSTD II teams in a battle for the top five spots.

The racing was intense, as the P1 Racing KTM team stretched out their lead during the first hour. I Like Big Gas!! suffered a tip over during the first hour. They were able to get back into the pits, repair the bike and make it back out, but the Village Idiots were now in second with Excel EMR and the Desert Rats Racing chasing them down. A red flag at 1 hour 49 minutes brought the race to a stop, as the bikes came in and the race clock continued to run down. As everyone re-gridded for the restart at 2 hours 23 minutes, the lights went out for the second time and the teams were back at it.

P1 Racing KTM got the lead again, as the two man team of Conner Blevins and Dustin Meador riding for Excel EMR got around the Village Idiots for second place overall, with LocoMotion, LSTD II, and Desert Rats Racing still in the mix right behind them.

Even with the intense competition, these teams held off all comers and gripped the top spots for the next two hours, as the race leaders slowly stretched out an 8 lap lead over the rest of the field for the top 3 spots. P1 Racing KTM was holding off Excel EMR and the Village Idiots when their rider tucked the front coming onto the front straight. Excel EMR took over the lead and held it, turning the fastest lap of the race on lap 180 of 1:16.489. As the clock wound down into the final hour, it would come down to a difference of a pit stop, as the final rider, Conner Blevins for Excel EMR, got on with 1:30 left in the race needed to fuel up. With 20 minutes, the Excel EMR team pulled off an incredibly fast gas and go, allowing Blevins to hold onto the lead and take the overall win and first in C Superbike when the checkers dropped at 6:26 pm. The Village Idiots finished strong, taking second overall and second in C Superbike. LocoMotion held onto third overall and third in C Superbike, with LSTD II holding off Desert Rats Racing for fourth and the Hold Fast team rounded out the overall top six finishers.
