Steve BONSEY (KTM), -91.521 seconds More, from a press release issued by KTM: Tomoyoshi Koyama crossed the line in his first 125cc MotoGP for KTM in sixth place for a creditable finish in the opening race in Qatar on Saturday, picking up 10 valuable championship points. The Japanese rider who joined the Austrian-based manufacturer’s lineup of factory riders this year to replace Mika Kallio (now competing in the 250cc class) faced tough competition from Aprilla and Derbi riders. Koyama started at seventh on the grid and sparred with a group of riders for fifth and sixth position during the second half of the race on the 5380 m Losail Circuit set in a spectacular desert landscape on the outskirts of Doha, Qatar’s capital. He finished in 38:37Â.906, 25.Â877 off the front pace set by Hector Faubel of Spain. “My engine was very fast which made it easy to overtake other riders. But the way the power kicked in at the exit of the corners was too aggressive, I probably would have caught Simone Corsi but I am happy with the result and my first race for Red Bull KTM!” the Japanese rider commented. The two junior riders in the Red Bull KTM factory team, 17-year-old Swiss Randy Krummenacher and American Steve Bonsey both put in solid races, finishing in places 19 and 22 respectively. Bonsey, making his debut MotoGp performance did particularly well, working his way up from the back of the pack. “I would have loved to score a point or two and with the lap times I managed to do in this morning’s warm-up practice, I could have achieved that quite easily, Krummenacher said. He experienced problems with chattering during the race but says he will go on into the next MotoGP with a lot of confidence. Bonsey also had some chattering problems but also admitted to making a few mistakes. “I opened the throttle too hard and too early and nearly highsided,” he said. “Eventually I decided to play it safe and make the finish line instead of risking a crash!” Bartol satisfied with 125 cc “Apart from the chattering problems, we had a good 125 cc race with a strong finish of Tomoyoshi Koyama. My guess is that this chattering problem doesn’t stem from the chassis settings, but from the power delivery of the engine, which was a bit too harsh. We will certainly look into that very carefully,” Bartol, the KTM Race Director said.
