FIM Announces New Endurance Racing Rules, Including Requiring Mechanics To Wear Fire Suits During Pit Stops

2007 Biennial Session Road Racing Commission – The Road Racing Commission meeting took place on Thursday 25 October at the Warwick Hotel in Geneva. The main decisions and modifications for the 2008 season (except otherwise indicated) are the following: Endurance World Championship Art. 1.7.1 Classes The class admitted for the World Championship is SUPERPRODUCTION, as defined under Article 2.6. The class admitted for the World Cup is SUPERSTOCK, as defined under Article 2.7. Art. 1.8.1 Licences Teams must hold a valid licence. The team will be entered and classified under the name mentioned on this licence. Art. 1.13.4 Results of qualifying practice The results will be based on the fastest time recorded by the riders in all qualifying practices. In the case where all qualifying practices have been cancelled, the results will be based on the fastest time recorded by each rider in all free practices. In the event of a tie, the second and subsequent best times will be taken into account. Art. 1.14 Starting grid At the Jury meeting which follows the last qualifying practice session, a provisional starting grid will be drawn up; it will include the number of teams qualified for the race based on the average of the best time of the qualifying results of the riders (reserve rider not included) of the teams. In the event of a tie, teams’ second and subsequent best average will be taken into account. If the total number of qualified teams is superior to the number of teams qualified for the race (Supplementary Regulations), the priority will be given to the Superproduction, Superstock and then Open class teams. Then, the provisional starting grid will be completed by adding the additional teams recommended by the Organiser with the agreement of the International Jury. For these teams, Art. 1.13.5 also applies. The definitive starting grid will be published one hour after the end of the warm-up. Teams will keep the same position as on the provisional starting grid. Art. 1.15.2 Duration or distance 1. Specific duration: the race must last a minimum of 6 hours and a maximum of 24 hours. Or 2. Specific distance: the race distance must not be less than 1000 km and must not be more than 3600 km. No more event in two races (article deleted) Art. 1.15.4 Driving time and rest period (“¦) If the rest period is not respected, a PIT STOP board (50 cm horizontal X 100 cm vertical) with the race number of the motorcycle will be shown to the rider only after notification has been made to his team. The rider will have to stop at his pit and his motorcycle has to stay there for a time equal to the non-respected rest time and no work can be carried out on the machine. Failure by the relevant rider to stop, having been shown the board 5 times, will result in that rider being shown the black flag. In the case where the organisation has been unable to carry out the pit stop before the end of the race, the relevant team will be inflicted with a time penalty equal to the non-respected rest time. Art. 1.15.7 Pit stops (“¦) In the working area in front of the pit box, during the pit stop, only 4 clearly identified and accredited persons are permitted to work directly on the machine. These persons must wear a fire retardant overall. (“¦) Art. 1.22.6 Finish of a race and race results The classification including the FIM, FMNR and title sponsor logos, will mention at least the following information: 1) The name of the team; 2) The make of the machine; 3) The names of the riders; 4) The performance carried out (laps, time); 5) The number of points; Art. 1.29 Deposit for fuel controls following a protest The deposit in case of dismantling and reassembling a machine to measure the cylinder capacity, following a protest, is USD 200.- (material included) The deposit in case of partial or complete dismantling of an engine or gearbox is USD 350.- (“¦) Art. 2.4 Superbike Technical Specifications – Deleted Art. 2.6 Superproduction Technical Specifications The modifications will be published later. Art. 2.9 FIM Homologation procedure To amend this chapter according to the procedure in the Superbike & Supersport World Championships and FIM Superstock 1000cc Cup. Art. 2.10 Fuel, Oil and Coolant To amend the Fuel Regulations (oxygen value), in view of a possible application of bio fuel in Endurance World Championship events. Art. 029.7.7 Starting Grid (for Endurance) To increase the gap between motorcycles from 2m to 3m. Position of the motorcycles at 30 degrees (instead of 45). Sidecar World Championship Art. 1.9.1 Schedule A If the number of riders cannot allow the carrying out of groups of 6 sidecars for each quarter final, the International Jury will decide a different quarter final organisation. Art. 2.3.52 Fog lamps Only fog lamps made by “ISA-EMS” et “LIFELINE” with the following references are allowed: – ISA EMS 90×90 ref. (6085-2) – ISA EMS – 90×92 ref. (6085-0) – ISA EMS – 120×65 ref. (6085-4) – LIFELINE 90×90 Radial rain light
