Racedays Honda Superstock riders battle in Misano heat
The Racedays Honda Superstock team leaves Misano World Circuit ‘Marco Simoncelli’ in Italy with mixed results from this weekend’s two races but with optimism about progress to be made in the next round.
In the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, riders Kyle Smith and Josh Day experienced differing weekends with only Smith able to score points in today’s race at the 4.226km Misano circuit which was red-flagged after 10 of the scheduled 15 laps.
British rider Smith, 22, finished in tenth place on a count-back but was confident that he could have taken his Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP to a higher position had the race run its full distance.
His 24-year-old American team-mate Josh Day endured a frustrating weekend of technical problems, which also finished his race after just three laps today.
In Saturday’s FIM Superstock 600 European Championship, Italian Kevin Manfredi finished in eighth place after a typically dogged battle while his team-mate Jake Lewis from New Zealand finished outside the points in 19th position.
Kyle Smith – 10th place, Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP
“It was a difficult race to start because it felt like the new tyre was pushing the front. As it went on I felt stronger and stronger, but they red-flagged it early after only ten laps and there were a couple of guys in front that I felt I could’ve caught. That was a bummer but we made some big improvements on the engine braking this weekend. The lap times were closer to the front and we matched the race pace of the leaders, but the result wasn’t there. We’ll take this data to the next race at Portimao where we have a test.”
Josh Day – DNF, Superstock 1000 Cup, CBR1000RR Fireblade SP
“It’s been a frustrating weekend with a weird crash on Friday and then some problems just getting comfortable on the bike. We lost warm-up this morning with some technical problems and then another issue that finished the race. I don’t know what caused all the problems but it just makes me hungrier for the next time in Portimao, which should be better. We’ll be well prepared and ready to fight in the top ten for sure.”
Kevin Manfredi – 8th place, Superstock 600 European Championship, Honda CBR600RR
“I had an improvement in qualifying but had a crash on the last lap. In the race I had a good start but I could not stay close to the leading group. We will try to understand what happened but it was a consistent race and we are ready for the next race in Portimao. I’ve never been there but we will go to test, which is important for us.”
Jake Lewis – 19th place, Superstock 600 European Championship, Honda CBR600RR
“It was a good race and I was able to make some good consistent lap times. I had my own battle and my times were not that far off the leaders. It was a good result, even if it wasn’t quite points, but we’re definitely moving forward and it was great for Kevin and the team to be back in the top ten.”
Jeremy McWilliams – Racedays Honda team manager
“Kevin didn’t quite reach his potential here at Misano and we weren’t able to give him the result that he wanted. We tried some things that didn’t quite give him the performance he needed but we have a test planned and we can move forward. Jake had a good, consistent, steady ride and we’re really happy with his performance. On the other side of the garage, we’ve had a difficult weekend trying to find a window for the riders to be comfortable in. Josh had a small technical problem in the race just as he was beginning to feel comfortable. Kyle struggled trying to find grip and although he was happy enough with a top ten, we all know that he’d want to be higher up. We’ve got a full two-day test planned at Portimao when we can hopefully build on what we’ve learned here.”
