A meeting took place recently at the FIM Headquarters between an FIM delegation made up of President Vito Ippolito, Chief Executive Officer Guy Maitre, Sports Director Ignacio Verneda, Achilles Damen, President of the Commission for Mobility, Transport, Road Safety & Public Policy (CMT), John Chatterton-Ross, FIM/UEM Director of Public Affairs and Anne-Marie Gerber, CMT Coordinator, and ACEM, represented by President Stefan Pierer, Secretary General Jacques Compagne, Public Affairs Manager Antonio Perlot and Winfried Kerschhaggl of KTM. The FIM and ACEM have been working together for a long time at the “operational level” but considering the increasing importance of this work, it was decided to meet at presidential level. Discussions included issues related to the sports side as well as the public policy, i.e.: – The need for long term planning for promoters, industry and FIM to ensure the development of the sport, in particular in relation to any changes to regulations on machine specifications. – The need for measures to ensure the control of competition costs. Both parties reviewed the recent conclusions of the initial rider training project which deals with recommendations for basic rider training in Europe. Making the results of this work widely available to riders and trainers across Europe is the next stage to be addressed. The link between the issues dealt with at the United Nations in Geneva, in particular vehicle regulations and road traffic safety, and the public policy issues at European Union level was also discussed. Finally, the importance of maintaining close and regular contacts between the FIM and the Industry was underlined.
