A Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix event will be held next year on one of the most famous circuits in the world, Indianapolis. During a press conference held in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States, on Monday 16 July, the company Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and Dorna Sports announced they had signed an agreement for the running of a Grand Prix in Indianapolis as from 2008, including the three classes: 125cc, 250cc and Motogp. Among the persons present were Messrs Bart Peterson, Mayor of Indianapolis, Tony George, owner of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Joe Chitwood, IMS Chief Executive Officer, Vito Ippolito, FIM President, Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna Managing Director, Mrs Gill Campbell, Laguna Seca CEO, American riders Kenny Roberts Jr and Kevin Schwantz, and 200 invited motorcyclists. In his speech, Mr Ippolito underlined the importance for the motorcycle sport to come back to Indianapolis, where everything started in 1909 with a motorcycle race, and the importance of all parties working together Dorna and IMS for the three-year contract, and the FIM for the homologation and support. Moreover, Indianapolis is one of the main and most well-known – places in the world of motorsports, which will have a great impact in the world of sport in general. The event will be held on 14 September 2008, on a circuit which uses a part of the oval and a new track designed in the infield.
