Cluzel halves points gap to Sofuoglu with Misano win

The World Supersport race in Misano was won in style by Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) who converted Pole Position into his 3rd win of 2015, the 10th of his WSS career. The Frenchman smashed the lap record for the MIsano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli by over half a second on his way to victory by 1.525s at the flag.

Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) finished 11th after crashing out of third on the final lap. The championship leader was lucky to be able to remount to salvage what could be an important 5 points, but his lead is now half of what it was entering the PATA Riviera di Rimini Round.

At the end of 19 laps, Cluzel was joined on the podium by PJ Jacobsen (CORE Motorsport Thailand) and Lorenzo Zanetti (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) who were second and third respectively.

Gino Rea (CIA Landlords Insurance Honda) finished fourth ahead of an elated Alex Baldolini (Race Department ATK#25 MV Agusta) who snatched fifth from Fabio Menghi (VFT Racing Yamaha) on the final lap.

Christian Gamarino was seventh on the Team Go Eleven Kawasaki, just edging Riccardo Russo (CIA Landlords Insurance Honda), Marco Faccani (San Carlo Puccetti Racing Kawasaki) and Martin Cardenas (CIA Landlords Insurance Honda).

Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) finished 11th after crashing out of third on the final lap. The championship leader was lucky to be able to remount to salvage what could be an important 5 points. Kyle Smith was unable to start the race after a technical problem on the sighting lap sidelined the Pata Honda rider.

The next round of the World Supersport championship takes place at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia on the first weekend of August.

Fighting fourth for Gino

CIA LANDLORDS INSURANCE HONDA’S Gino Rea fought hard to take a superb fourth place at the eighth round of the World Supersport Championship at Misano in Italy.

Gino said: “It was a bit of a disappointing race. Fourth position is OK and better than where I qualified but we were expecting to take it to the top three. We made a change from yesterday to help the front and it was good in warm up but then in the hotter conditions of the race I had a few moments.

“I was passed by a couple or three riders early on and once I got past them again the gap to the leaders was too much. I pushed hard and almost crashed a few times, so I decided to hold off the guys behind. Fourth is OK, but we really want to battle with the top three which is where I think we can be and we’ll keep working on that.”

Riccardo Russo, starting from 13th showed pace by racing through to eighth place at the finish line. Martin Cardenas starting 14th improved in the race and finished 10th. Kevin Manfredi started 20th and ended 18th after reaching as high as 16th early in the race.

CIA Landlords Insurance Honda Team Manager Simon Buckmaster said: “Gino struggled in the race losing the front. We had made a change in warm up that didn’t quite work in the race. He couldn’t stay with the leaders and managed the situation well. Kenan’s crash meant he ended fourth which is a good result. The gap in the calendar will allow his foot injury to heal further and we go into the last part of season in confident mood.

“Ricky had a strong race and scored a strong top 10 after losing some confidence in practice. It is a good result for him in a home race.

“Martin finished 10th and is happy to be in the group battling for fourth. That’s a decent result.

“It was Kevin’s first race for CIA Landlords Insurance Honda and it is good to get a finish under his belt. He can move forward from here in the coming rounds.”

Championship Leader Sofuoglu 11th At Misano

Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) found himself in a fight for the final podium place at Misano and in his attempt to make it certain he fell before remounting to end up 11th on the day. He still left Misano with a 20-point championship lead over race winner Jules Cluzel

From the start of his 100th career WSS race Sofuoglu found a relative lack of rear grip compared to his main rivals and he had to work hard on the entry of corners to make up for it. The three-time world champion was involved in a fight with Lorenzo Zanetti for much of the race and after passing his rival on the second last lap Kenan tried to open up a gap to take a definite third.

Kenan was to fall at turn four of the final lap, losing the front, but he restarted and ended up 11th, securing five points that minimised his losses on a tough day under the Italian sun. He now has 155 points to Cluzel’s 135.

After Sofuoglu’s bad luck the best-placed Kawasaki rider was Christian Gamarino (Team Go Eleven Kawasaki) taking seventh place inside a warring group of seven riders, which included eventual ninth place rider Marco Faccani (San Carlo Puccetti Racing Kawasaki).

Dominic Schmitter (Team Go Eleven Kawasaki) took points again, this time for 13th place.

Kenan Sofuoglu: “I found out in the race that the rear was spinning a lot and everybody around me had better acceleration than me. I tried to do everything on the front brake and front tyre but for 20 laps you cannot do it every time. Finally I crashed but got some points after I restarted. If you want to be the champion you cannot accept fourth place in races and today it was only possible to finish third.”

Disappointment for Smith and Pata Honda in Misano

Pata Honda rider Kyle Smith was unable to start today’s eighth-round World Supersport championship race at Misano World Circuit in Italy, which was won by French rider Jules Clusel. Series leader Kenan Sofuoglu crashed out of third place on the final lap, eventually coming home 11th, while Honda CBR600RR rider, PJ Jacobsen, finished second.

Smith crashed out of yesterday afternoon’s qualifying early and was unable to secure a grid position higher than 11th. However, the 23-year-old British rider demonstrated the pace shown earlier in the weekend by finishing this morning’s warm-up in fifth place.

Unfortunately, as Smith went to the grid on his sighting lap for this afternoon’s 19-lap race, a technical problem prevented him from completing the lap. His crew are still investigating the reason for the issue.

The World Supersport championship will re-group in Sepang, Malaysia for the next round on 2 August, when Smith and his crew will be hoping for better luck than they experienced in Italy this weekend.

Kyle Smith – DNS

There is not much to say, really, other than I had a technical problem on the sighting lap. I could have ridden the bike back to the pits for the guys to investigate but I was stopped by the marshalls. It’s a real shame because I was hoping to make up for my mistake in qualifying yesterday, but that’s how it goes sometimes and we’ll have to try to come back stronger in Malaysia. I’ve never been to Sepang, but I’m really looking forward to racing there.

Pieter Breddels – technical co-ordinator

It’s been a very difficult weekend for Kyle and his crew and things have certainly not gone as we had planned or as we would have wished. All we can do is apologise to Kyle for not giving him a CBR that he could race today. We’ll investigate the issue that ended our weekend early and try to learn whatever lessons we need to.
