From a press release issued by Don Emde: Californian Floyd Emde led the 1948 Daytona 200 from start to finish aboard one of 50 Indian 648 Big Base Scouts built specially for that year’s race. It would be Indian’s last victory of America’s most prestigious motorcycle race. Floyd passed away in 1994, but to celebrate the 60TH anniversary of his historic win on the old Daytona beach course, Emde’s son Don (also a Daytona 200 winner) has worked with restorer Steve Huntzinger to create an accurate replica of the race-winning machine. The “Floyd Emde 648 Replica” will be unveiled during Daytona Bike Week at Noon on Wednesday, March 5th at the Daytona 200 Monument, located near the Daytona Convention Center between the beach and the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort at 100 North Atlantic Avenue. At the unveiling, Don Emde, Author of “The Daytona 200. The History of America’s Premier Motorcycle Race,” will give a presentation about motorcycle racing on the beach at Daytona, as well as detailing the highlights of the motorcycle restoration project. There is no charge for admission and anyone at Bike Week is invited to attend. There is a multi-story parking garage across the street from the Hilton.
