Dal Smilie, the AMA Director who resigned last fall in midst of a scandal over falsified expense reports, has quit his day job as an attorney for the State of Montana, taking early retirement. Smilie resigned from the AMA Board immediately when confronted with questionable expense reports submitted without required receipts. After a three-month accounting review, a forensic auditing firm specializing in fraud presented its findings February 15, at a meeting of the AMA Board of Directors held in Indianapolis. Following that presentation, AMA Director and Assistant Treasurer Jeff Smith, who had signed Smilie’s expense reports before submitting them to staff for payment, also resigned. The remaining Board members then directed staff to turn the findings of the forensic audit over to law enforcement authorities in Ohio, where the AMA is based, and in Montana, where Smilie lives and worked. Smith subsequently also resigned from his position as Treasurer of AHRMA. In a statement posted on the official AHRMA website, Smith said he had resigned “because I feel some responsibility…” Local news reports on Smilie’s retirement from his job can be read here: ~http://www.billingsgazette.net/articles/2008/02/23/news/state/48-investigation.txt~ ~http://www.helenair.com/articles/2008/02/23/top/55st_080223_smilie.txt~
