Tomlinson Wins Four at MSR Houston at CMRA Opener

Garet Tomlinson shined bright amid stiff competition, riding his Pirelli-shod, GMAN Racing-prepped, Yamaha YZF-R6 to four wins during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) first round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, February 19, on the 17-turn, 2.38 mile road course at MSR Houston, Angleton, Texas.

Overnight condensation made for some slick spots in practice, and the day stayed cloudy and overcast with a stiff wind and temperatures in the mid-60’s, but lap times were still good despite the conditions. Tomlinson went to work, outriding his fellow competitors for five podiums total, taking the wins in 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, B Superbike Expert, C Superbike Expert, South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert and second in P1 Racing/Metric Garage – Formula 1 Expert, with a fastest lap of 1:34.690 on Lap 2 of Race 4 – C Superstock Expert.

The other Sunday standout was Nick Doolan, who rode his Yamaha YZF-R6 to five podiums as well, with the wins in: P1 Racing/Metric Garage – Formula 1 Expert, MotorSport Ranch – B Superstock Expert, second in B Superbike Expert, C Superbike Expert, and third in South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert with a fastest of lap of 1:35.205 on Lap 3 of Race 10 – Formula 1 Expert.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline race, P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert was exciting, with lap times in the mid to high 30s, with Eddie Thornton on his BMW S1000RR turning a 1:34.840, JC Camacho aboard his Yamaha YZF-R6 with a 1:35.241, and Garet Tomlinson, also on a Yamaha YZF-R6 with a 1:35.726, grabbing the top three spots.

The 28-bike grid lined up, Thornton had pole position, with Camacho in the middle, and Tomlinson on the outside of the front row. The start lights went out, and Thornton shot into the lead with Camacho and Tomlinson in hot pursuit. As the field spread out on Lap 2, Thornton held the lead. Suddenly, he tucked the front going into the turn Diamond’s Edge, and Camacho who was immediately behind, jumped his motorcycle. The rest of the pack wove around the crash and really shook things up. As the tangle sorted itself out, Tomlinson and Doolan were battling for the lead, with Kawasaki ZX-10R mounted Craig Montgomery and Brandon Young fighting right behind. Yamaha YZF-R1 riders Doug Frenchak and Steven Nedd went at it hammer and tongs, while Braeden Ortt poked his Yamaha YZF-R6 around Dewayne Davis on a Yamaha YZF-R1. Shawn Randall, also on a Yamaha YZF-R1, had his hands full with BMW S1000RR rider, Joseph Caruso.

A lot of the up-front battles had less than a second separating them for a real nail biter of a race. Doolan finally got a tight pass on Tomlinson to grab the lead, and crossed the checkers a mere 0.299 second ahead of Tomlinson. Montgomery was next for third, edging Young by a hair, who in turn managed to hold off Frenchak by a scant 0.115 second. Nedd crossed next for fifth, followed by Ortt, Davis, Randall and Caruso to round out the top ten. Doolan also grabbed the P1 Racing purse for being the first 600 rider across the line.

Top Novice was Tyler Raboin, taking four wins with his Yamaha YZF-R6, topping the box in MotorSport Ranch – B Superstock Novice, Monkey Moto NTXSBKS – B Superbike Novice, Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, and Altus Lawton Motorsports – C Superbike Novice, turning a fastest lap of 1:39.692 on Lap 2 of Race 3, the B Supestock race.

The Jennifer Millsap “Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A. C. Horn, went to Abigail Van Slooten for her combined finishes aboard her Suzuki GSX-R750 in Monkey Moto NTXSBKS – A Superbike Novice, A Superstock Novice, Monkey Moto NTXSBKS – B Superbike Novice, MotorSport Ranch – B Superstock Novice, and Monkey Moto NTXSBKS – Formula 1 Ladies.
