Wanganui based road race team owner Brian Bernard is all set for the up coming Castrol Power1 New Zealand Superbike Championships. He will again campaign a stable of Yamahas and the first outing will be at the Cemetery Circuit ’08 on Boxing Day. Bernard finalised his 2009 team this week and will have only one rider, 21-year old Queenslander Gareth Jones. Who will contest both of New Zealand’s premier classes, on a Yamaha R1 in NZ Superbikes and a Yamaha R6 in 600 Sports Production. “Gareth went extremely well here last season and we believe we have both the machine and the rider to run at the front of both fields,” said Bernard from his Wanganui base. “Our team may be small, but we are hoping for bigger results in 2009,” Bernard added During the New Zealand off-season, Jones has been racing in the FIM European Superstock Cup 1000 and he lies 18th overall with one round to go. “I really enjoyed my racing in New Zealand last season and it will be great to return in December,” said Jones from Europe. The Triumph 675, which he intends to race in the 600 Sports Production class, Formula Wanganui and BEARS (British, European & American Racing). Along with a “Special” he has had fabricated by Hamilton’s F1 Engineering, which will be know as the “MDF1 650″ and will be raced in Formula Three. Since his 2007 Isle of Man TT crash, the 44 year-old, affectionately known as “The Gremlin” has raced in most classes in New Zealand, holds ten national championships as well as his 2003 “Isle of Man” Production 1000cc TT and Production 600ccTT titles. Ever since his crash, on the last lap of the 2007 Isle of Man, 1000cc Superstock TT race, which left him in intensive care.
