By Andy Ruhl: Ivan Garza continued his winning streak and took maximum Kawasaki contingency money in the third round of the Arroyo Seco Motorcycle Association (ASMA) season. Garza won every race he entered on his Bridgestone shod Kawasakis. The El Paso, TX rider is almost undefeated in the first three rounds of the season, finishing second only once in round two. “This year is a big gamble. I’m not trying to do it all on my own anymore. I’ve got Evan Steel helping me and Little Big Racing helped me with the bikes. I also really need to thank my dad for all of his help. I’m really just trying to improve my riding, and I’ve found a better way to do physical training for the races. We could always use more sponsorship too! But I’m hoping to constantly improve by finishing better and going faster in every series I race. I’m really happy that I’m winning almost all of my races here at Arroyo Seco, I’ve only been 2nd one time. I never really gave myself a good opportunity to win this championship but I’m going for it this year,” Garza said. “The Bridgestone tires are working really great on my Kawasakis,” he added. Garza was challenged by southwest racers Roger Heemsbergen and Davie Stone. Heemsbergen, on his Michelin equipped GSX-R750, caught and attempted to pass Garza on the second to last lap of the Formula Arroyo Unlimited GP by Evan Steel Performance, but wasn’t able to get around. “I knew if I passed him he would come right back by me. I just didn’t quite have the squirt to get by this time,” Heemsbergen said. Garza appeared to pick up his pace in the closing laps after being pressured by Heemsbergen. Davie Stone, also on Michelins, rode his GSX-R1000 impressively to catch Garza in Unlimited Superbike by Edge Kawasaki. Stone made a great start from the third row and worked his way around the other riders to catch Garza. Stone and Garza’s riding styles differed slightly, and Stone said this made passing difficult: “I caught him but in some corners it seemed like he parked it in front of me and it caught me off guard. I was missing some mojo this weekend and I just couldn’t get around. He rode good.” Stone impressively worked his way up to 3rd place in the Formula Arryo race after starting from the back of the grid. He appeared to be catching Heemsbergen and Garza but ran out of laps. “I rode better in the Formula Arroyo race than in the Unlimited Superbike race,” Stone said. Sergio Sanchez won the Kawasaki Ninja 650 spec race after Roger Heemsbergen had a problem with his bike and dropped out of the lead. Heemsbergen had his handlebars come loose and he couldn’t continue. Tom Savoca finished second and Robert Sanchez, Sergio’s brother, finished 3rd. Other race winners are: Roger Heemsbergen in Lighweight Superbike by ASMA trackside support, Tom Savoca in Formula 40, Brad Tinker in Lightweight GP by Pit Moms, and Michael Coberly in Heavyweight Twins by Mayor Domo Chocolate. Arroyo Seco Raceway is located near Deming, NM. For more information, visit ~http://www.ASMAracing.com~ or call Roger Heemsbergen at 505-494-4794.
