Hayden Gillim was presented the 2010 AMA Sports Road Race Horizon Award today, the final day of the annual AMA Sports Road Race Grand Championships at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, recognizing him as the “most outstanding” rider at the event “about to move from the amateur ranks into AMA Pro Racing competition,” according to AMA Sports.

Former winners of the AMA Horizon Award include: Jason DiSalvo, Ben Spies and Blake Young in road racing and Nicky and Roger Hayden (Gillim’s cousins) in dirt track racing.

Gillim, 15, of Philpot, Kentucky, faced stiff competition for the award from 14-year-old Garrett Gerloff, of Trussville, Alabama, as the two riders finished one-two in four different races Wednesday.

Gerloff, riding his Gerloff Boys Racing Suzuki GSX-R600, won the first of the riders’ head-to-head match-ups, 600cc Supersport, but Gillim switched from using AMA Pro Daytona SportBike-spec Dunlop D211 GP-A tires to Dunlop D211GP N-Tec tires (the same tires Gerloff was using) on his Team 95 Yamaha and won their next three battles.

“Coming into this weekend I never really beat Garrett before unless he got tired or wore out his tires of something,” Gillim told Roadracingworld.com. “Coming into the weekend I knew that if I didn’t win the award Garrett was going to be the one. Those were some of the hardest races I’ve had to do. I wouldn’t be going this fast without Garrett, because I had to push so much to run with him.”

After losing to Gillim in the 750cc Supersport and 600cc Superbike races, Gerloff stepped up his game in their final duel in 750cc Superbike. Gerloff ran his fastest lap of the day, a 1:29.669, to close in on Gillim on the final lap, but a lapped rider on the back straightaway thwarted Gerloff’s last-lap plan.

In recognition of his efforts, Gerloff was named the AMA Youth Roadracer of the Year.
