It was the middle of the night in the summer of 1989 at Nelson Ledges, then one of the crudest, most primitive racing circuits in North America, and Cathy Creighton White was in her element. Hustling a screaming Yamaha FZR400 through the dark, Open-class bikes blasting past, high-output headlights blazing, walking the tightrope between chasing a lap time and staying out of the way, knowing the muscles in her legs would be burning the next day. It was a challenge, and White loved every minute of it.
“It’s a big challenge to race at night. You’ve got the big guys coming up behind you with the bright lights, and you can’t let that upset you—you had to keep to your line and keep on rocking,” says White, now 59, of Powhatan, Virginia.
“I loved getting on for a stint, knowing the bike is already warmed up when you jump on and you exit the pits and your brain tells you to hit it hard…”

Endurance racing occupied a much larger place on the motorcycle road racing scene three decades ago than it does now. White and her friends, particularly Letha Jeffers, created the first all-female endurance racing team in the U.S., won some races, attracted a lot of public attention to the sport, and had a lot of fun in the process.
