Greenwood Closes Dominant Season With Win
LRRS wraps up 2014 season at NHMS
Scott Greenwood finished an impressive season in the Middleweight Grand Prix of the Loudon Road Race Series with his sixth win in seven races to clinch the class championship. He started off the season with a win in the premiere class – in wet conditions on April 26– and prevailed in the same weather to close out the year at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
In between, the race weekends featured abundant sunshine, and Greenwood showed a clear advantage in speed over the rest of the field. He settled for fifth in a race on May 17, but bounced back in June to win the main event of the Loudon Classic and never lost again in the class.
“I had a pretty decent points lead that I had built up throughout the season,” Greenwood said of his approach to Saturday’s race on a slick track. “I knew I needed to finish (the race). That was the biggest concern, to make sure I had a clean race and didn’t end up on the pavement.”
He finished the year 237 points and was chased to the podium both on Saturday and on the season by Eric Wood (203 points) and Jason Carter (162 points).
“Congratulations to him on running a fantastic season,” Wood said of Greenwood’s championship. “He’d been really strong all year. He rides mistake-free and has been very fast.”
The championship in the premiere class is a repeat performance for Greenwood, who edged two-time reigning champion Wood for the 2013 title last October. The two riders have finished first and second in the class in each of the last four seasons.
“It feels good to win this,” Greenwood said about winning the title. “This championship is the marquee that everyone wants to win.
“I was fortunate enough to win it last year and claw my way back into it. And, this year, right from the get-go, I’ve been up front and doing well.”
The final race weekend of the season at NHMS wrapped up the championship hunt in over 25 LRRS classes at both the Expert and Amateur levels. The winners will be recognized at a banquet on November 1.
