Two-time and defending AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Champion Josh Hayes was the fastest rider during the damp opening practice Friday afternoon at the Triumph Big Kahuna Atlanta at Road Atlanta. Hayes led the field by as much as three seconds at one point, and his lap of 1:26.679 on his Monster Energy Graves Yamaha YZF-R1 ended up being about one second faster than anyone else. Hayes crashed in the closing minutes of the 50-minute session. He was able to ride his damaged motorcycle back to pit lane.
