PICKERINGTON, Ohio (May 30, 2007) The 2007 season has been good so far for Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes. The Gulfport, Mississippi native began the year never having tasted victory at several tracks on the AMA road racing circuit. He’s removing tracks off that list nearly every week. Next up for Hayes is Road America on June 3, round five of the AMA Pro Honda Oils Supersport Championship presented by Shoei. Hayes leads the Supersport standings by 12 points over Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden. For Hayes winning at the scenic road course in Elkhart Lake, Wis., is one of his big goals for this season. “Even though I’ve never won at Road America, it’s still my favorite track,” Hayes said. “I’ve done well there over the years. I’ve led a lot of races and earned my first Superbike podium there. I’m very excited about going up there and trying to finally get a win. My only concern is our Supersport bike handles and accelerates awesome, but it lacks a little top speed. My guys are working on that. Top speed could be an issue with the long straights at Road America, but Eric Bostrom beat me last year in the Formula Xtreme race with a slower bike, so I’ve studied the tapes to see what he did and hopefully I’ve learned some things that will help me.” Hayes is trying to give Honda its first Road America Supersport win since 2000. Roger Hayden hopes to close the points gap on Hayes this weekend. The popular Kentuckian hopes to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Tommy, who won this race at Road America three times straight. “We’ve got a good championship battle going, but I need to get up there and win some races,” Roger Hayden said. “Road America is one of those tracks where we usually stay bunched up most of the race. Getting the last lap right there is really important.” Tommy Hayden will be in the field as well. He is ranked fifth in the standings, looking to consistently find the right combination on his Yoshimura Suzuki Supersport machine. Steve Rapp is having a standout year in Supersport, entering Road America third in the points on the Attack Performance Kawasaki. He’s trying to hold off the surging Jamie Hacking of Monster Energy Kawasaki. Hacking is steadily working his way back into championship contention after having a scary crash in Birmingham, Ala., in April. Hacking is the defending and two-time Road America Supersport winner. The Pro Honda Oils Supersport presented by Shoei event this Sunday is part of the Suzuki Superbike Doubleheader on June 1-3. The race will broadcast nationally live on SPEED at 3:00 pm Eastern.
