Reigning AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Champion Josh Hayes started the defense of his title off by grabbing pole position today for the season-opening doubleheader at Daytona International Speedway. Hayes earned the provisional pole position on Thursday with a time of 1:38.804 on his Monster Energy Graves Yamaha YZF-R1, but 2010 Championship runner-up Tommy Hayden surpassed Hayes today with a 1:38.323 on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000 during final qualifying. Then on the final lap of the final qualifying session, Hayes picked his way through traffic well enough to record a 1:38.228, stealing the pole position and the bonus Championship point that comes with it from Hayden’s grasp. Hayden ended up second on the grid and not happy that he lost the first Championship point of the season to Hayes. Hayden’s younger brother Roger Hayden qualified third with a 1:38.614, an improvement of more than one second from Friday, on his National Guard Suzuki GSX-R1000. Tommy Hayden’s teammate Blake Young got the final spot on the front row with a lap of 1:38.767 around the 2.9-mile infield road course.
