Despite having to contend with triple digit temperatures, the squad put in a pair of top-five practice performances and claimed a second row grid position during the day. Geoff May was in the mix right from the start, posting the fifth best time in both the Superstock and Supersport practices. The Georgian’s fastest time aboard his Pirelli-shod GSX-R1000 Superstock machine was a 1: 52.247, while he logged a 1:55.080 aboard his 600cc GSX-R in Supersport. While competitive, May wasn’t entirely satisfied and feels there’s more to come. “It wasn’t quite as good as we had hoped today,” he said. “We didn’t get to come here and test and the 1000 is a new bike, so we’re just a little behind right now. We’re going through everything, looking to figure out what’s working and what’s not. We’re about a half second off where we need to be on both bikes, but it’s only Friday and I feel we’re right on the verge of being where we need to be.” One plus is the fact that tire wear shouldn’t prove to be an issue at the venue as the new track is settling in. May explained, “It’s not nearly as abrasive as we’ve seen here in the past. We’re not seeing any of the tire wear concerns. We were able to do double distance on a set of tires. All we’ve got to do is get the thing set up to do the lap times.” Colombian Martin Cardenas was impressive once again for Team M4 EMGO Suzuki. One race weekend removed from his podium-earning ride at Road America, the former Spanish Supersport champ picked up a second row starting position for tomorrow’s Formula Xtreme final, qualifying seventh fastest at 1: 54.604. In addition, he posted the eighth best lap during the Supersport practice at 1:55.404. Youngster Michael Beck got off to a solid start to the weekend himself, ranking 13th fastest in the Supersport session at 1: 56.002. On Saturday Team M4 EMGO Suzuki will compete in the 13-lap Formula Xtreme final and qualify for Sunday’s Superstock and Supersport races.
