Highland Park Resort, a 1000-acre off-road riding park located near Cedartown in northwest Georgia, is seeking the enthusiast community to support it at upcoming permit hearings in order for the park to re-open in 2006. Highland Park Resort, which is owned by road racer and Marietta Motorsports owner Paul Wright, originally opened October 1, 2005, but was shut down soon after due to an unintentional “procedural oversight” by Polk County in the issuance of its Special Land Use Permit (SLUP). The park has remained shut down, however, as a result of a temporary restraining order issued in response to a lawsuit filed by a neighbor of the facility. According to updates posted on Highland Park Resort’s website (www.highlandparkresort.com), strong support from the motorcycling community at a December 2005 meeting of the Polk County Board of Commissioners resulted in the Board ruling in favor of the park and amending the Polk County zoning manual. Now, Highland Park Resort must re-apply for a new Special Land Use Permit to re-open in 2006, and park owner Wright is once again asking for the enthusiast community to show its support at two upcoming Polk County Board of Commissioners meetings. The meetings are scheduled for January 19 and February 7. For more information, go to www.highlandparkresort.com or call (770) 425-5252.
