“Every road race fan has a favorite rider and fans often compare riders from different eras, asking, ‘Would Rider X from 10+ years ago be able be able to beat today’s Rider Y?’ In the mid-to-late 1960s, one of my most favorite riders was Mike Hailwood. When Honda withdrew from Grand Prix racing at the end of 1967, Hailwood was given a Honda RC174 297cc Six and a Honda RC181N 500cc Four to run in non-world-championship events.
“Hailwood raced various bikes off and on for the next two years before then switching to F1 and F2 car racing, driving for the Surtees and McLaren teams. In 1974 he retired from professional car racing after badly breaking his right leg at the German F1 Grand Prix.
“Fast forward to 1977. Bored, Hailwood wanted a new challenge, and after sitting on a Ducati 900 at the British (motorcycle) Grand Prix, his thoughts turned to making a motorcycle racing comeback at the next year’s Isle of Man TT! With help from journalist Ted Macauley, arrangements were made for the dream to come true …”
