Team M4 Monster Energy Suzuki’s John Hopkins is scheduled to have surgery on his right wrist early next week. “I rode with my wrist broke for years,” Hopkins told Roadracingworld.com on Sunday, after finishing the second AMA Pro Racing National Guard American Superbike race of the weekend at Auto Club Speedway. “I tried to get it fixed at the end of last year, but it didn’t change much. “I was referred to some wrist specialists, and they said there was some hope for my bones. They said there was already lots of arthritis in the bones, but the main problem was the crazy amount of scar tissue. “Here at Fontana, you have to push and pull on the bars so much to get through the chicanes that the wrist bones actually move around in your wrist. When the bones in my wrist move the scar tissue gets down in between the bones and limits my movement and locks up the wrist. I was having to roll the throttle open with the palm of my hand down the straightaways today. My bike worked great today. My bike was good enough to win, but I’m just physically handicapped.” Hopkins said that the doctors plan to remove as much of the scar tissue as possible, and because of the minimally-invasive procedure they plan to use he will be able to resume normal training five days after the surgery.
