270-horsepower, 220-mph MotoGP racebike? We asked two experienced riders who have won before
and after facing setbacks, plus two up-and-comers.
Jorge Lorenzo won the last of his three MotoGP World
Championships with Yamaha in the last year of Bridgestone spec tires. Then he
switched to Ducati, winning three races with the Italian brand, on Michelin
tires. This year he moved to Honda, aiming to join the exclusive club of riders
who have won premier-class races on three different brands of bikes.
“Things changed a lot for me when MotoGP switched to
Michelins and unified electronics at the end of 2015,” Lorenzo said. “At the
beginning the rear Michelin had so much grip and there was nothing at the
front, so every time you started to push, on the second or third lap you
crashed. Every rider— crash, crash, crash, crash— always mid-corner with
throttle. Then Michelin reduced rear grip and improved the front
tire, so little by little the situation was compensated …”
