Howard, Kelsey, Ricks, Wagnon Win Multiple CMRA Races In Cresson, Texas

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association returned to Motor Sport Ranch in Cresson, Texas this past race weekend. Spectators and riders alike couldn’t help but wonder if the outside temperature was somehow inversely linked to the lap times: while the temps skyrocketed, lap times plummeted.

The Minis set the stage for the weekend’s hot action as seven riders gridded up in the E Superstock RentMyNinja.com race, and the top four, Alan Phillips, Brandon Altmeyer, Jess Foltz, and Ryan Max Johnson, proceeded to lay down comparatively ridiculous lap times, separating themselves from the rest of the field. Alan Philips would take the checkered flag on his Kawasaki EX 250, running a best time of 1:27:398. To understand just how fast a 1:27 lap time is at MSR Cresson, consider that average 600 mounted novice racers circulate at 1:25. Even more impressive is the fact that Philips started from the back of the pack, before passing Brandon Altmeyer for the lead on lap three.

In the six-hour Big Bike Endurance, Pirelli mounted Derek Wagnon dropped the hammer on the Quadwealth/SCRC’s KTM RC8 at the start of the race and never looked back. Riding in a league of his own, Wagnon put the proverbial beat down on the rival Village Idiots team with a race-best time of 1:15:324 in the first hour. Solid performances by the remainder of the SCRC team (Ty Howard, Bryan West, Jeremy Louder, Derek Wagnon, Ryan Andrews) relegated the rest of the field to fighting for second place. At the end of the day, the Village Idiots (John Orchard, Chris Headley, Brandon Cleland, Blake Cochran) riding a Yamaha YZF-R6, and Lone Star Track Days (Mark Niemi, Andy Galindo, Gabe McClendon), riding a Kawasaki ZX-6R, would round out the top three teams. There were no red flags in the race, but there was some drama when Ms. Alexandra Humphries from team The Dirty Heads ran over Team ASR’s Art Fonseca (aka the “Flying Fat Man”) in the Rattlesnake. Fonseca tucked the front of his Suzuki GSX-R750 entering the tight right hander and apparently made a poor speed bump. Fortunately, both riders were A-OK. Fonseca was able to sprint to Humphries’ rescue and help her get her Suzuki SV650 picked up and back on the track. Team Dirty Heads would go on to take third position in the Formula 2 division.

As Saturday’s sun set, Sunday steamrolled its way from the calendar to the playbook. Ty Howard’s return to racing on his new KTM RC8 promised to keep folks honest, but everyone wondered just how fast twenty-year old Derek Wagnon would be able to go on his GSXR-R600, tuned by RaceworX. Wagnon showed them by winning the B Superstock and C Superstock South Central Race Center events before showcasing the true depth of his talent in the A Superstock RaceworX race. Starting from the back of the grid, Wagnon would blaze his way towards the front of the pack, passing fast guy Danny Kelsey for second. Wagnon then set his sights on the nearly impossible beating the CMRA’s orange unicorn, Ty Howard. At MSR Cresson, a 600cc motorcycle isn’t really a disadvantage to a 1000cc machine, and Wagnon showed that by running well into the 1:14:XX lap time range, with a best of 1:14:059 on the second lap while in pursuit of Howard’s KTM RC8. Howard managed to hold Wagnon off for the win, however, handing Wagnon his only defeat of the weekend. Howard’s motorcycle lap record at MSR Cresson in the counter-clockwise direction, a 1:13:899 set back in 2007, remains secure for the time being. Wagnon would capture another win in his final race of the day, the Island Racing Services – C Superbike event.

Darrell Ricks remained perfect for yet another weekend, winning the Lightweight Twins Ridesmart Motorcycle School, Formula 2/Road and Track Suspension, D Superstock, and D Superbike Fastline Motorcycle School events. One racer one that races against him – remarked that Ricks is virtually unbeatable at the moment.

Fourteen year old Hayden Schultz put on one heck of a show in the Novice division, winning the B Superstock Lone Star Track Days, C Superstock Moto Liberty, C Superbike Ridesmart Motorcycle School, and Formula 1 Road and Track Suspension events. Hayden’s outstanding performance came at time when his would-be, and significantly older, competitors stumbled. Jose Silva, Rune Medius, and Peyton Inge all ate grass at one point or another during the weekend and proved to be no contest for the youngster. Silva, however, would recover to win two races (A Superbike novice and B Superbike novice).

The CMRA now heads to MotorSport Ranch in Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, in Hallett, Oklahoma, on July 8 – 10, where the CMRA will host a full day of racer practice day on Friday, Mini sprint races, a 3-hour Mini endurance and a 4-hour Big Bike endurance on Saturday, and a full card of Big Bike sprint races on Sunday.
