FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: I find the title of your news release about Canada’s road racing opening race at Calabogie somewhat insulting. It’s not often that we get out of industry sponsors and I’m sure that the people at Waste Management Canada would also be turned off at the reference to them as “garbage collectors.” I think you owe this new sponsor, who has come forth to put much needed financial support into our sport, an apology! Don Empey “Inside Motorcycles” photojournalist Plainfeild, Ontario, Canada And now, some reader comment: FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: How is he so sure? Maybe a call to Waste Management is in order to confirm if in fact they would be offended by being called garbage collectors. It’s a respectable business, but it is what it is. This is like the episode of Seinfeld where Jerry’s buddy Seth is forced to get a job at Kenny Rogers Roasters & corrects Jerry when he calls it ‘fast food’. “Not fast food, Jerry. Good food, quickly.” Some people have to play the symantics game for all it’s worth. Hilarious! Enzo Assainte Bergenfield, New Jersey FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: As a ROADRACING WORLD junkie and partner in an international environmental consulting firm I may have a somewhat unusual perspective on your “Howl of Indignation” reply to the Canadian photog that called you guys on the reference to Waste Management Canada (WMC) as “Garbage Collectors.” While I have no business relationship with WMC, I suspect the photog, and likely WMC, recognize the reality that waste management firms are very sophisticated businesses that do have arms of their operations that conduct trash collection, but they do significantly more. I wonder what ROADRACING WORLD staff feel when they are described as “reporters” or “media” rather (than) say motojournalists focused on bringing motorcycle racing enthusiasts the best information about racing and moto technology without “mindless cheerleading” as a way (to) distinguish themselves from the rest of the moto mag marketplace. If you expect us to appreciate the nuances of your differentiators maybe you can appreciate that of others. The more money that companies are willing to invest in motorcycle racing, the better so let’s do what we can to support them. Or better yet work with them to figure out how to use recycled materials to make safety barriers to protect racers!!! All the best, Kevin P. King, LEP East Hartford, Connecticut Followed by an official Roadracingworld.com editorial response: I’m good with being called a reporter, editor, media type, racer, old guy, dude, whatever. It is what I am. This argument is about some warped view of dignity or something. As soon as some official from Waste Management complains to me about a clever headline which motivated more people to open and read the underlying press release, and thus learn about Waste Management, I’ll take this whole thing seriously. Until then, it’s all just garbage! Best regards, John Ulrich Roadracingworld.com
