Hurtado’s Reign at Arroyo Seco Raceway Continues
Despite overcast skies and the threat of rain, racing conditions at Arroyo Seco Raceway were optimal Sunday, April 12 as track temperatures reached into the mid-70s and there was not any wind to contend with.
Saturday’s Superpole, qualifying for the premier event, the 12-lap Formula Arroyo sponsored by Evan Steel Performance, resulted in David Hurtado taking pole position with a gap of more than a second between himself and Thibault Few, who would be gridded second. Going into Sunday, it seemed Hurtado would run away with the two races he would compete in.
In the first race of the day, the seven-lap Unlimited Superstock sponsored by Kurvey Girl, Hurtado and Few battled for the win, but it was Hurtado who met the checkered flag first by a narrow margin of three-hundredths of a second. The two would face off again in the Formula Arroyo.
Few had a comfortable lead from the very beginning, due to a poor start by Hurtado. “My launches always sucked,”Hurtado said. “I just can’t nail it.”He also claimed that part of the issue might be a rough clutch on his GSX-R1000.
Hurtado entered the first turn Horseshoe in third place behind Ben Alarcon on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Few, on his Kawasaki ZX-10R, led the race comfortably as Hurtado whittled away at the gap. At the half way point, Hurtado challenged Few for the lead by passing him in the Horseshoe, but Few reclaimed first with a faster line on the outside.
Few fended Hurtado off the next two laps, though the battle continued. Few had more drive on the back straight, but Hurtado’s late braking kept him on Few’s tail. It seemed a pass made by Hurtado just following the Horseshoe might stick as he gained some cushion between himself and Few, but Few once again had more drive on the back straight and regained position, only to leave the track going into the Carousel, a left-hand sweeper. “(The) brakes were not there,”Few explained. “They boiled and then I ran off.”
But Few rejoined the race, leaving a cloud of dust in his wake as he tore through the infield and back onto the track. In the end, he would claim third place, 2.3 seconds behind Alarcon and 13.1 seconds behind race winner Hurtado. Few’s and Hurtado’s best lap times were 1:09.382 and 1:08.949, respectively.
Other nail-biting action was between amateurs Dan Dickerman and Sean Ungvarsky, who had never raced the track in its counter-clockwise configuration. In a head-to-head showdown, Ungvarsky and his Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R topped Dickerman and his Yamaha YZF-R6 with two wins to Dickerman’s one, although Dickerman bested his new rival in the premier amateur race, the 12-lap Formula Amateur sponsored by Speedcell. Both Dickerman and Ungvarsky expert-like times nearly broke into the elevens as their best lap times were 1:12.035 and 1:12.137, respectively.
