Hurtado Claims Seat atop the ASMA Throne

Expert David Hurtado won two races last Sunday, November 13 at Arroyo Seco Raceway near Deming, New Mexico, and he is once again the owner of the number-one plate. Hurtado entered the seventh and final round with a 14-point lead over Jason Brown, who was in second position with a thin 2-point lead over third-place Mikey Shreve.

In the first race of the day, the Unlimited Superstock series sponsored by kurveygirl.com, Brown and his Suzuki GSXR1000 snagged the hole shot with Shreve and Eric Sotomayor just behind. During that same lap, Shreve and his Yamaha YZF-R1 was able to stick to Brown’s rear tire close enough to make a pass for first position on the outside of the Carousel. Shreve, only six points behind series-leader Hurtado, seemed to have all of his chips on the table and intended to start the day with a strong statement to his competitors. On the second lap, however, the red flag was raised as Lorenzo Thomas had a spectacular high side exiting Yucca.

The race resumed shortly after, and Brown once again entered the Horseshoe first, Shreve and Thibault Few occupying the two and three spots. Hurtado and his Kawasaki ZX-10R climbed from fifth to fourth when he passed Few inside the Horseshoe on the second lap, and Hurtado maintained this position for the following three laps before passing Shreve at the very same place. Shreve retook the third position with a pass on the outside of the Carousel. Just before the white flag was shown, Hurtado passed Brown where else than inside the Horseshoe, and Brown also fell victim to Shreve’s late braking into the Carousel. The top three of the series remained in these same positions at race end, Hurtado finishing in first place, and Shreve and Brown finishing in second and third, respectively.

In the premier race series, the 12-lap Formula Arroyo sponsored by Evan Steel Performance, Brown, Hurtado and Sotomayor were the first to enter the Horseshoe. Shreve had trouble keeping his front tire planted during the start and was held up by Few until the second lap when Shreve was able to make a pass into the fourth position. That same lap, Hurtado passed Brown for the lead and maintained this position for the rest of the race as he put his head down and disappeared from the rest of the pack. The surprise of the day was Sotomayor’s performance; onboard a loaned GSXR1000, Sotomayor cut 1.2 seconds from his personal best and was able to fend off Shreve and finish on the third step of the podium behind Brown, who finished second.

David Hurtado:

“It was a competitive season and I’m really happy with the 2015 Kawasaki (ZX-10R). The bike rips, does anything you want it to. It has been a great transition from Suzuki and works well in tight courses. I’m trying to work some sponsor deals and race other places as well next season. My goal is to reach my mentor Roger’s (Heemsbergen) lap times of 1:07.1.”
