Zarco, 0.5 More, from a press release issued by KTM: 125cc season opener red flagged four laps into race at Qatar Heavy rain quashed the chances of riders to tackle a full 125cc GP in the season’s opener at the Losail circuit in Qatar when the race was red flagged after just four laps. Just minutes before the red flag came out, when it was clear that the rain was going to affect visibility, Red Bull KTM Moto Sport’s Marc Marquez of Spain saw his own race come to a premature halt when he had a huge high side and slid through the gravel. Prior to that, Marquez had a good start and was lying in third place but as he crashed before the race was stopped he was excluded from the results. No injury for Marquez Marquez fortunately was not hurt. “I had a good start and held third place for a while,” Marquez said. “Even when it started to rain, I was still top five and looking forward to a good race result. But the track got wetter, I hit the kerb, the rear end stepped out and the bike spat me off. My bike went really well, and I didn’t lose too many points because the others only scored half the points, so I am still confident, and I look forward to the next race in Japan.” Beaubier’s debut ride cut short due to cancellation It was also disappointing for the second Red Bull KTM Moto Sport factory rider Cameron Beaubier, riding in his first GP. Despite the shortened race, the 16-year-old American took it in his stride. “I feel that things are getting better and better for me,” he said. “I lacked confidence on the brakes during the practice sessions but in the race I was as late on the brakes as everyone around me and I had a lot of fun riding. I had a good start and my bike went well. I would have liked to continue but then the rain got harder and the race was stopped! Red Bull KTM Moto Sport team boss Francesco Guidotti said the end result had been unlucky for the team because Marquez had been in third place. “Marquez held third position on the opening laps and he looked strong. But it was the right decision to stop the race when they did, and not to re-start again. With the light reflections on the wet tarmac, it definitely would have been too dangerous!” As it became clear that it would not be possible to continue, the race was declared finished and the final results reflected the order of riders at the end of lap four. Riders received half points for their efforts. The Qatar GP is the only calendar stop where the races are held under floodlights so the rain turned the asphalt surface into a virtual mirror.
