Iddon tops free practice as 0.960 seconds cover the top 17 at Oulton Park
Christian Iddon continued his impressive form to end the opening free practice sessions at Oulton Park fastest for the Tyco BMW team, in an incredibly close finish where just 0.960s covered the top 17 riders on a dry track in Cheshire.
The opening morning session in wet conditions had been led by Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne, but in the second free practice Iddon fired himself to the top of the times and then held off the challenges from his closing rivals in a frantic fight to the finish.
Iddon held the advantage as Luke Mossey closed in for the Quattro Plant Teccare Kawasaki team; he pushed Buildbase BMW’s Richard Cooper back to third in the final minutes with Alastair Seeley launching himself up to fourth place for the Royal Air Force BMW team.
Tommy Bridewell had a strong second session as the Bennetts Suzuki rider fired himself into fifth position ahead of Lee Jackson and the leading Ducati rider, Danny Buchan onboard the Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati as Be Wiser Ducati’s Glenn Irwin and Byrne ended the day eleventh and 15th respectively in the super close session
American John Hopkins showed his pace in eighth position on the ePayMe Yamaha ahead of James Ellison, whilst Dan Linfoot completed the top ten for Honda Racing making it all six manufacturers represented in the top ten.

Christian Iddon:
“I am happy to be P1 today especially as it was so close with the top 17 covered by less than a second; I haven’t done that for a while. In fact I am not sure I have even done that before! This morning we had difficult conditions and we thought it was going to try out more than it did so we didn’t change the set-up on the rear that much, so we still had a bit of a dry setting so I actually struggled a bit and had to ride harder on the front.
“This afternoon was pretty good really; I think the times are only going to get faster and we are already pretty quick. We are actually going to work on almost slowing her down a bit as around here because there are so many elevation changes; it is a lovely track but it is quite hard work! We want to make her a bit easier and then hopefully, fingers crossed we can stay P1!”
