Track Officials to Increase Runoff at Turn 5 Prior to Superbike Weekend in Sonoma SONOMA, Calif. (April 30, 2007) On-track safety continues to be a primary objective at Infineon Raceway as track officials have begun a project that will create additional runoff at Turn 5. The work will be completed by the Kawasaki AMA Superbike Showdown, presented by Supercuts, May 18-20. Track officials met with riders at the recent Yamaha-sponsored test session, and after hearing their concerns, will address Turn 5 on the road course. The safety barrier at the crest of Turn 5 will be moved back an additional 40 feet, giving riders up to 155 feet of runoff in the area. One of the riders track officials chatted with at the test session was Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking, the defending AMA Supersport and Superstock champion. “Infineon has really grown on me over the years,” Hacking said. “With all of the safety improvements they’ve made and all of the work they’ve done with the riders it says a lot about their commitment. This is one of my top two tracks, so to go from one of my worst 10 years ago to one of my favorite places says a lot about what they’re doing there.” The increased runoff continues the raceway’s commitment to on-track safety. Over the last four years, the raceway has increased runoff at virtually every turn, added more than 100 pieces of Airfence, and moved the protective wall and tire pack in Turn 6 (Carousel) to the top of the slope, among other projects.
