FIRST PERSON/OPINION: Via e-mail: This is Scott Gilbert’s mom. He was practicing at Fontana on Saturday, August 1st with Fastrack for a race with WERA on Sunday. There are lots of rumors out there about Scott’s injuries, and we are getting a lot of phone calls wondering if Scott is going to make it. I am asking if you can post, print, whatever you can do to set the record straight. Scott and Jimmy Wood came together going into Turn 3. Nobody really saw what happened, so I guess we will never know. Scott’s bike hit the wall and blew up. Scott did not hit the wall, but he was airlifted to Loma Linda Hospital where he remained until Wednesday, when he was transferred to Kaiser Riverside. We are still there and don’t know when he will be released. Scott has a collapsed lung, over 50 fractures in his upper body, including: Wrist, both shoulders, collar bone, clavical, most of his ribs front and back, multiple breaks in his back, several in his neck, breaks in his face, which he had surgery for on Sunday, August 10th. Surgery went well. They inserted plates into his jaw. No injuries below his hips, legs are great. None of the breaks are on his spine, so he is very lucky. Scott will be on a long road of recovery, but is expected to recover 100%. The rumors at the track and the phone calls are a little upsetting, and we just wanted to get the news out there that he will be okay! Whatever you can do would be great. We would also like to thank everybody for all the prayers and well wishes they have sent Scott. The racing community is awesome! Rhonda Gilbert Riverside, California
