It’s Wet At Auto Club Speedway

It was not raining at 8:30 a.m. at Auto Club Speedway, but the pavement in the paddock and on pit lane was wet, and rain was in the area and in the forecast for Fontana, California. The Weather Channel is forecasting a 30-50% chance of precipitation, with strong thunderstorms (a rarity in Southern California) possible, throughout the day Sunday. A high temperature of 58 degrees F is expected and gusty winds of up to 30 are possible. AMA Pro Racing officials have said all weekend that they will evaluate all factors before deciding their course of action. Because AMA has never raced in the rain at Auto Club Speedway and the local club racing organization, WERA West, has followed the same policy, it’s believed that rain tires have never been tried on the track. Other rain-riding concerns for riders include the available traction on the paint stripes they must cross at several points of the racetrack and, in the worst case scenario, sliding into the many walls around the circuit, particularly the walls on both sides of the track in the Turn One chicane and Turn Three area. At post-time, teams were preparing for the 9:00 a.m. scheduled start of Daytona SportBike practice. Stay tuned.
