Jon Champ Dominates During CRA Round One

The Central Roadracing Association’s first round of the 2016 season took place on Brainerd International Raceway’s Competition Course May 13-15 and it was a typical May weekend in Minnesota. Conditions over the weekend ranged from moderate to miserable, with riders contending with rain, sleet, and even snow during. The unique conditions saw a lot of riders struggling with tire temperatures, with some riders even opting to run street tires in an effort to get some heat, and therefore grip, on the cold track.

Jon Champ stamped his authority on the Lightweight Expert classes taking absolutely dominant wins in all four of the races he entered. His rival from the past two seasons, Christian Schmidt, is focusing on his ZX-10R for 2016 and it looks like Lightweight debutant Aaron Anderson will be the rider to try to break Champ’s stranglehold on the class.

The newest addition to the CRA schedule, the Featherweight class, saw former CRA champion Brad Zajic sweep the three races for the class on his Fisk Brothers Racing Yamaha R3. Zajic was joined on the grid by multiple Yamaha R3s as well as Nate Minster on his KTM RC390 Cup bike.

The Middleweight, Heavyweight and Unlimited Expert races saw reigning CRA champion Scott Stall take multiple victories on his Pirelli-shod Anderson Racing Yamaha R6 but he didn’t show the same level of domination he has in the past as clutch issues relegated him to his backup bike. Kyle Ohnsorg took his Michelin-equipped BMW S1000RR to victory multiple times while Christian Schmidt brought home victory in the GP4 Trophy dash on his RMK/Schmalenberg Racing Kawasaki ZX-10R.

The Novice classes saw some outstanding performances by racers competing in their first race weekend with Jesse Vanderweide crossing the line first in Lightweight Supersport (his first official race) and Dillon Baumeister taking victory in Heavyweight Grand Prix.

The CRA will be back in action June 10-12 as we welcome our CCS friends in a dual-event weekend to be held on Brainerd International Raceway’s Competition Course.
