Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Herrin was suspended for one event/two races and put on probation for the remainder of the 2011 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike season for his actions on the final lap of the Daytona 200 race March 12. That incident involved contact between Herrin and Team M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby and resulted in Westby and Vesrah Suzuki’s Taylor Knapp crashing at approximately 170 mph in the tri-oval at Daytona International Speedway. Westby suffered a badly broken left thumb during the crash, while Herrin stayed on two wheels and collected points for fifth place. But following a meeting involving AMA Pro Racing officials, Monster Energy Graves Yamaha staffers and Herrin Tuesday at Miller Motorsports Park, AMA Pro Racing has reduced Herrin’s suspension to just one race. “I’m definitely happy with it,” Herrin told Roadracingworld.com Wednesday. “It’s way better than not racing at all. There isn’t much to be said other than I’m happy I get to ride at Infineon. That’s one of my favorite tracks, and there’s going to be a lot of family and friends there for me. That will be nice. I will lose some points not being able to do one of the races, but at least I won’t be out of two of them, which would definitely kick me out of the Championship. So that’s what I’m happy about it. I’ve just got to thank AMA for re-thinking all of that over and working with us, and I’ve got to thank everyone at Yamaha for making that happen for me. I know it was really important to them, too, but it means the world to me to get that done and be able to race in one of the races there.” Herrin said he does not know if he will have to sit out Race One or Race Two at Infineon, or how that weekend will work with the one-race suspension. Herrin said he also has yet to talk directly to Westby, the primary victim in the incident at Daytona. “We were going to go and sit down and have a conversation with Dane at Miller,” said Herrin, “but we ran out of time with doing rider reports and the team wanted to be there whenever we talked and they had to get to a flight. So we’ll see how it goes from here. “I have talked to Taylor Knapp, though, and he knows it wasn’t intentional. I’ve known Taylor for quite a while. Hopefully, Dane knows it wasn’t intentional. I apologize to him if he thinks it was. I would never ride like that. Hopefully, I will be able to prove that that’s not how I am and try and ride as safe as I can through the rest of the year and hopefully not get tangled up with anybody again and just have some fun, clean racing.” “I haven’t talked to him yet,” said Westby, who used a special brace on his left thumb in order to ride at the test at Miller Motorsports Park. “I feel like there’s unresolved business, and I didn’t feel it was right (for Herrin) to ride around (at the test) without having spoken, getting that off the table.”
