A jury in Chicago has awarded Jam Sports $90 million in damages from Clear Channel Entertainment Motor Sports for lost profits and punitive damages in a lawsuit related to Jam Sports’ attempt to take over promotion of the AMA Supercross Series from Clear Channel three years ago. Jam Sports sued Clear Channel and AMA Pro Racing when Jam’s bid to become the exclusive AMA Supercross promoter failed and AMA Pro Racing continued to sanction races promoted by Clear Channel. Jam alleged that Clear Channel continued to negotiate with AMA Pro Racing despite terms of a letter of intent between AMA Pro Racing and Jam that gave Jam exclusive negotiating rights during a specific time period. A final contract was never signed during the negotiating period and AMA Pro Racing subsequently renewed its contract with Clear Channel. Jam also alleged that Clear Channel used economic pressure to lock it out of stadiums that hosted Clear Channel events and concerts. The jury ordered AMA Pro Racing to pay Jam about $169,000 in the verdict, which is expected to be appealed. Statements from the various litigants are expected to be issued soon.
