The youngster from Oberdiessbach finished in the top three in his first season and was runner-up the following year. Lüthi clinched consecutive titles in the discipline in 1999 and 2000, before moving on to 125cc road racing in the German ADAC 125cc Junior Cup in 2001. His first season on the German scene saw him finish in sixth overall, which allowed him to move up to the German IDM 125cc Championship in 2002. Midway through the season, he graduated to the 125cc World Championship with the Elit Grand Prix team run by Daniel Epp. He entered seven races and took a promising ninth place at Estoril. In 2003, his first full campaign in the World Championship saw him taking 2nd at Catalunya in a thrilling race against Dani Pedrosa, before suffering a serious pelvic injury in the Brno round. 2004 continued in the same vein for the youngster, with a season blighted by injury and misfortune, but he got the opportunity to make another title assault in 2005, once more on a Honda and with the same team behind him. MotoGP CAREER 2002: World Championship debut at the 125cc German GP riding a Honda in the Elit Grand Prix Team. Final Championship position: 27th with 7 points. 2003: First full season in the Championship with the Elit Grand Pix Team. Final Championship position: 15th with 68 points. 2004: Another year on the Elit Grand Prix Team with a Honda. Final Championship position: 25th with 14 points. 2005: Becomes 125cc World Champion riding for the Elit Grand Prix Team. Final Championship position: 1st with 242 points – 4 wins: France, Czech Republic, Malaysia and Australia. OTHER FACTS ABOUT LÃœTHI’S CAREER: · Lüthi is the youngest ever Swiss rider to win a world championship title in any class. · At the age of 19 years and 61 days he becomes the sixth youngest rider ever to win a world title after Loris Capirossi, Dani Pedrosa, Valentino Rossi, Andrea Dovizioso and Manuel Poggiali. · He is the first Swiss rider since Luigi Taveri in 1966 to win the 125cc world title. · Lüthi is also the first Swiss rider to win a title in any of the solo classes of GP racing since Stefan Dörflinger won the 80cc title in 1985. · It is the first time ever that Honda have won three successive rider titles in the 125cc class.
