Brainerd, MN (September 8) Zalusky Advanced Riding School and Track Days held its third Track Day event of the season at Brainerd International Raceway on September 6. Top riders from the Upper Midwest and Canada came together for the largest motorcycle event of the season on the Competition Course. The Track Day Event was presented by Heinen’s Yamaha and included the second Shootout Race of the series. The Shootout presented by Worldwide Machining and Welding, Inc., included two 5-lap sprints with a cash purse in total of $2000. The sprints included 4 classes and a field of riders thirsty for a big paycheck. Points leader and top Midwest racer, Tony Kasper, led the race aboard his 24/7 Yamaha YZF-R6 and was able to have a sizable lead on his competition in GP3/4 Expert Class. Zach Hughes gave his every effort to close the gap with Kasper, but Kasper was victorious and Hughes finished in 2nd place. A battle ensued for 3rd place between Eric Purves and Canadian Charlie Caldbick, but Caldbick was able to gain ground and took the last spot on the podium in 3rd place. In the GP1/2 Expert class, returning points leader, Karl Rehpohl aboard his Suzuki SV650, had an impressive start and was immediately challenged by USGPRU Racer, Tom Swager, aboard his Yamaha TZ250 prepped by Zambrana Performance. Swager took the lead from Rehpohl for a tough battle for the win. Rehpohl finished in 2nd and Mark Miller rounded off the podium in 3rd place with stellar riding. In the GP3/4 Novice class, Kris Skellenger took the lead from the start with impressive riding and the fastest laps of the day for the novice ranks. As a result, Skellenger crossed the finish line to take the checkered flag for an impressive win. In a two-way battle for 2nd place, Nathan Massa showed every wheel possible to pressure Jonathon Shore, but Shore held him off to finish strong in 2nd place followed by Massa. Returning Champ and young gun, Cole Speer, put on another great show with impressive riding to land another win for the GP1/2 Novice class. The rest of the field may have been the best entertainment of the day as positions were being swapped left and right. Jon Champ was an early front runner in the pack of riders and lost positions to Jason Hoffman and Anthony Myhre who charged to the front of the pack. Hoffman put his head down to finish strong in 2nd place followed by an impressive finish for Myhre aboard on a Yamaha YZF 450.
