Kelsey Takes Multiple Podiums and CMRA’s Overall Number One Plate at Texas World Speedway

Kelsey took home multiple podiums and captured CMRA’s number one plate during CMRA’s final round sprint event on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Texas World Speedway, in College Station, Texas. A cold front and rain overnight made for slick conditions in the morning, giving way to sunshine and temperatures climbing into the mid 70’s for better conditions by early afternoon. Kelsey took five podiums home, winning the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula One Expert, RaceworX A Superstock Expert, and HighPerformanceCrew.com A Superbike Expert classes with his Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R1000. He took the win in B Superbike Expert and second in TrackTactics Track Days B Superstock Expert on his Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R750.

In the first match up of the morning, conditions were very slick with water on parts of the track for race two, TrackTactics Track Days B Superstock Expert. Fielding his Suzuki GSX-R750 in the tricky conditions, Kelsey soon had his hands full with Conner Blevins aboard a Kawasaki ZX-6R. Blevins wrestled the lead from Kelsey, and James Camacho Jr. was breathing down his neck from third with a Yamaha YZF-R6. Blevins barely held onto the lead, crossing the line a razor thin 0.105 second ahead of Kelsey for the win. The race leader’s furious pursuit of each other stretched out a 30-second lead over the rest of the field.

The next match up, Sunday’s headline Formula One Expert race, Eddie Thornton was the one after Kelsey. Kelsey pitted his Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R1000 against Thornton’s Pirelli-shod BMW S1000RR. As the lights went out, Kelsey put his head down and took the lead. Thornton stayed with him, putting down the fastest lap of the race on lap five, turning an amazing 1:44.835, and taking the lead from Kelsey. Kelsey put his head down, going after Thornton and taking the lead back on lap six with a fastest lap of 1:44.993. It was a game of pass, and pass back, with the race coming down to the front straight on the last lap. As Kelsey continued his charge, Thornton was right on his tail section as they ran up on a bike in the last stretch. With an amazing split pass, the final 150 yards became a drag race, with Kelsey edging Thornton by 0.121 second for the win. William Guthrie, Allan Campbell, Conner Blevins, Joseph Caruso, Jeff Wrobel, Bobby Davies, Dean Dufrene, and Sean Gurevich rounded out the top 10.

Conner Blevins won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600cc machine across the finish line during the Formula One race. Bringing awareness to finding a cure for Breast Cancer is an important aspect of this race and an anonymous donor put up the $10,000 season purse to help make that happen. In addition to the $500 per race purse, the class paid a $5000 Season Championship bonus. Additionally, a donation is made by the CMRA to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each entry in the race. Qualifying for the race is sponsored by 212Decals.com and because of track conditions, the race was gridded by points at this event. Kelsey, Guthrie and Bobby Davies all received a share of the $150 cash purse. Blevins also took home four podiums, with wins in TrackTactics Track Days B Superstock Expert, C Superbike Expert, second in B Superbike Expert, and third in South Central Race Center C Superstock Expert. Jim Whitten went four for four again on his Ducati 1000SS, taking home the wins in Formula 2 Expert, Lightweight Twins Expert, D Superbike Expert, and Formula 40 Lightweight Expert.

Top Novice for the weekend was Jose Luis Trevino, who traveled from San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico to take four podiums on his Yamaha YZF-R6, taking the wins in Lone Star Track Days B Superstock Novice, Moto Liberty C Superstock Novice, second in House of Paint Designs C Superbike Novice, and third in North Texas Superbikes B Superbike Novice.
