The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held its third event of the 2011 season at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur, Texas, this past weekend, and 419 entrants, including 31 Mini endurance teams, signed up to have a go at the long and winding 2.5 mile, 11 turn course. The events of the weekend proved to be nothing less than wild, too, thanks mostly to the weather. The conditions for Saturday’s Mini sprint races and 8-hour Mini endurance race were largely typical of Texas this time of year, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the lower 80 degree F range, although winds were quite gusty at times. All week long, however, the forecasters were calling for thunderstorms, and those storms finally blew into the area in the wee hours of Sunday morning, bringing with them threatening lightning, pouring rain, blustery winds and temperatures that plummeted into the upper 40 degree F range by the end of the day. The heavy weather especially the lightning created a situation that caused race control to combine races and compress the day’s schedule. Racing was delayed until after the lunch hour, and no one present could immediately recall the last time that had happened at a CMRA race.

But before the weather turned sour on Sunday, 31 Mini endurance teams gridded up on Saturday to battle it out in the 8-hour Mini endurance race that featured a rich $2500 cash purse offered by Shogun/Brooks Gremmels. Every team wanted to pocket a chunk of that cash, but at the end of the day, it was Davis Rod and Cycle (Jesse Davis, Ryan Andrews, Steve Guynes, Derek Thomas), riding a rented Kawasaki EX250 who captured the overall win, the win in the Formula 4 class, and pocketed the most Shogun prize money. After 8 hours of racing, the team won the race by less than a lap over the EX250 of Anderson & Sons (Dirk Anderson, Shea Anderson, James Camacho, Jr., Darrell Ricks) and the EX250 of RMJ Racing (Brandon Altmeyer, Ryan Max Johnson, Keith Hertell, Mark Tuttle). The winners wouldn’t have it easy, though, as they had to fight to get back into the lead after a collision with RMJ Racing in the first hour of racing that shuffled the two teams down in the order.

Sunday’s sprint racing took place under some of the most miserable conditions imaginable for road racing. Some racers opted not to risk it in the slick conditions, and parked their bikes, but others gridded up to have a run at the track in the very slick conditions, with many getting caught out by the treacherous track. Still others were lucky by default – the CMRA’s Overall #1 plate holder, Ty Howard, was out of the country on business, and couldn’t have picked a better weekend to be absent from the race track. As one racer remarked while sitting on the soaking wet grid for a race late in the day, “This isn’t really racing. The guy who doesn’t fall down is the winner.”

In the Expert ranks, Daniel Adams survived the elements and came home one of the biggest winners on the day, claiming wins in the Formula 2 Expert, Lightweight Twins Expert and Superbike D Expert classes on his Suzuki SV650. For Adams, it was a breakout day, as he beat his arch rival, resident CMRA fast guy, Darrell “DJ” Ricks, who has been unbeatable of late. After the races Adams said, “I had been watching the weather all week and I was ready for this. I told myself that this would be the weekend to make something happen. I like ECR, but I’ve never ridden in the rain here before. Man, I got to tell you, it was something else out there!” Danny Kelsey also had a good day in the Expert division, claiming wins in the Formula 1 Expert, Superbike A Expert and RaceworX Superstock A Expert races on his Honda CBR1000RR. At the end of the day Kelsey would say, “There was no way I was going to try and ride faster than I needed to win my races. Trying to go too fast on that track today would mean crashing. A lot of people tried that, and it didn’t work.”

In the Novice group, Jose Silva had a big day. Riding a Kawasaki ZX-6R, Silva managed to win six races, Lone Star Track Days Superstock B Novice, Moto Liberty Superstock C Novice, OnRoad OffRoad Suspension Superstock A Novice, Superbike B Novice, Formula 1 Novice and Ridesmart Motorcycle School Superbike C Novice. Silva’s day wasn’t perfect however, as he fell victim to the slick conditions in the Superbike A Novice race, crashing out. Also having a strong day in the Novice division was Ryan Max Johnson. On Saturday Johnson fell in the mini endurance race, bruising his ankle, but on Sunday it didn’t seem to bother him much and he claimed wins in four races on his Suzuki SV650, Road & Track Suspension Formula 2 Novice, Ridesmart Motorcycle School Lightweight Twins Novice, OnRoad OffRoad Superstock D Novice and Fastline Motorcycle School Superbike D Novice.

The CMRA now heads to Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma, on May 20 22, where the CMRA will host a full day of racer practice day on Friday, a 2-hour Mini endurance race and a 5-hour Big Bike endurance on Saturday, and a complete schedule of Mini and Big Bike sprint races on Sunday.
